If its a good hotel and there is a hotel safe, I would leave my passport there. Its easy to misplace your passport, so do not put them in your jacket as you might forget and leave them behind. China are full of stories of crafty pickpockets, including fake yuan notes, pay them in 100 and your cashier will soon inspect them very closely. Shitty place, China. IMHO. Is this your first visit? Are you travelling alone? The hotel you stay should have photocopies of your passport but make a photocopy of your passport (first page and entry stamp page). There are many good travelling pouches (samsonite) for such purpose and you should seriously invest in one if you scare of losing passport.

If really lose, take the photocopies of passport from hotel and report local police, go to MFA and they can issue a temporary travel document, cannot remember the name of this document. This will help you to come back to SG.
