Just my 2 cents since the issue of the Old Guards are brought up. Singapore that time was already a 1 party dictatorship after the decimation of the Barisan Socialis. However eventhough it was a 1 party dictatorship, it was not a 1 man dictatorship. LKY might be PM but I believe that at the Cabinet and senior party leaders like goh Keng Swee were not dominated by LKY. LKY at most was the 1st amoungst equals. However after Pinky came into the scene and the old guards got retired LKY became more dictatorial. There was no one else to argue with him and keep him in line. That was the beginning of the end of Singapore and as a result we are in the situation we are in now. All the problems Singaporeans face now is caused by LKY due to his failures to ensure Singaporeans livelihood.

I think the beginning of the end came when the last of the older guard, Richard Hu, was no longer Finance Minister. Pinky took over from 2001 to 2007. Pinky also became PM from 2004 onwards. Ho Ching joined Temasek in 2002.

yes once LKY got Pinky into the scene and when pinky came into the scene,things just got worse, pinky is incompetent but LKY needs him there as he is his son.. so need to support him no matter what

He gave way to GKS even when latter found another life partner. Never dared criticize GKS. The other chap who stood up to LKY was Toh Chin Chye who was openly critical of PAP policies.
