SINGAPORE - The cost of producing the National Day Parade (NDP) rose substantially when the parade was held in venues like the Padang and the Marina Float.
This was pointed out by the Minister of Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen when asked by Mr Gerald Giam during Parliament on Monday about the Government's total expenditure on the National Day Parade in the past 10 years.
The 2011 NDP that was held at the Float, for example, cost $17.17 million to produce. The NDP held at the Padang in 2010 cost $20.59 million. The parade held at the National Stadium in 2006 cost $6.99 million to produce. The higher expenditure in 2010 was due to the hardening of the field so that it could withstand a heavier load, as well as the putting up of LED screens and supporting towers for the visual display.
Dr Ng explained that venues such as the Padang and the Float required substantial preparatory work for the show and spectator stands.
The NDP show accounts for about half the expenditure and includes costs of production and items such as costumes and props, lighting and effects, as well as rental of multi-media equipment. The remaining expenditure is on infrastructure development and improvement works, logistics and supplies, publicity and security operations.
Participants are provided meals and transportation for the rehearsals. They are also provided props and costumes for their performances.
The commitment and contributions of these participants are entirely voluntary.
Government expenditures on the NDP for the last 10 years are as follows:
