On June 8, 2026, a massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Mindanao, Philippines, occurring nearly simultaneously with a significant eruption of the Sakurajima volcano in Kagoshima, Japan. These natural disasters hit during a period of high diplomatic tension, as Japan and the Philippines moved forward with formal negotiations to redraw their maritime boundaries (Exclusive Economic Zones) without involving Taiwan, a move that drew sharp protests from both Taipei and Beijing.

All maritime boundaries should adhere to UNCLOS. UN Convention for laws of the seas. Very straight forward.
Unfortunately this was imposed after colonial powers grab huge chunks of the pacific.
China, although signatory, wants to grab that chunk too. But nearer it's sphere of Influence.

If the Philippines and Japan proceed with their redrawn claim, the waters 200 nautical miles east of Taiwan would theoretically be partitioned between them, effectively ignoring Taiwan's own Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in that area.
These claims meet and overlap in the western Pacific Ocean directly east of Taiwan, potentially "squeezing or erasing" or overriding Taiwan’s 200-nautical-mile projection from its eastern coast.
