National Service and PAP

Every person around me seems to support NS because they have wasted much of their youth on NS and that they believe that NS will defend Singapore. Well, advanced weaponry will defend Singapore, not 250,000 men who are sitting ducks to bomb raids in a modern warfare situation.

NS is used to create a class system like in the UK. Officers are the knights and the men are the slaves/farmers. The only difference is that Singapore does not have a long history of wars and there is no justification to give special status to some people. If you remove NS, the system of elitism and unfair concentration of resources will be gone.

With that gone, you think PAP will survive?

What has the size of Singapore got to do with serving NS?

If you are talking about the need to obtain army personnel, then there are ways to recruit able-bodied men to sign on as regulars. Forcing them to pay more for a man or corporal will make them more efficient and save money for Singapore.

Being small is a material restraint because even if you can afford all sign up as regulars now, and all willing, the economic and industrial productivity will correspondingly go down. And if that happens, government revenues will fall and even regulars can't be paid. Therefore, the bulk must be NS and reservists, and involved in the economy and industries too.

Military units that are lackadaisical in their daily operations only to stage a facade of competence whenever there are external audits. Malingering pervades the SAF. Sinkies would be better off having the shackles of NS removed from them, giving them the impetus to boost the economy and generate greater wealth to pay for a truly professional army of adequate size.

You are thinking of keeping the current number intact. Why not reduce it to a bare minimum?

Keep the NS conscription law intact and only draft when we have war coming.

Contract out all the useless logistic and admin work.

Keep the professional force 50k strong. You save money and have a competent air/marine force. You keep so many army land soldiers for what?

There is only one of 2 ways to go on this. If u believe that we are in serious danger, surrounded by hostile muslim neighbours that are much bigger than us, than all males AND females must do national service. U need everyone that can carry a rifle. See the Israel example.

If u don't believe that such a threat exists, than u must go with a professional army, like most of the world. Very few countries have national service with small threat.
