National Conversation Panel Unveil

SINGAPORE: The committee spearheading a national conversation about Singapore's future has been unveiled.

It comprises a mix of cabinet ministers, academics, representatives of interests groups and ordinary Singaporeans like a taxi driver and students.

Headed by Education Minister Heng Swee Keat, the 26-member team includes Chua Yong Yong, president of the Singapore Society for the Disabled; Ismail Hussein, head of the Islamic Banking Unit of Maybank Singapore and cabbie Patrick Teo.

Government representatives include Minister of State for Community Development, Youth and Sports Halimah Yacob, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Law and Education Sim Ann and Member of Parliament Indranee Rajah.

The oldest committee member is 61 years old and the youngest is 25.


The "Our Singapore Conversation" logo which contains three distinct elements -- the words 'Home', 'Heart' and 'Hope' -- was also unveiled on Saturday.

[TD]The Remaking Singapore Committee was set up in February 2002 to complement the Economic Review Committee's work in reviewing strategies for 21st century Singapore.

Chaired by Minister of State for National Development Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, the Committee comprised members ranging from Ministers of State and Members of Parliament to members of the public from the private sector, voluntary organisations and tertiary institutions. Five Subject Committees - Beyond Careers, Beyond Condo, Beyond Club, Beyond Credit Card and Beyond Cars - were also formed to review specific areas.

The Committee's report was submitted to the Government in July 2003. Its recommendations focus on the political, social and cultural aspects of our survival as a nation.
