N.Zealand biz students to attend sex edu classesAsiaOne | Sat Nov 20 2010
Lack of sexual knowledge is especially true for students from Asia, where formal sex education is not a norm.
BUSINESS students in New Zealand will soon have to attend sex education classes because managers say many of them from Asia are "sexually ignorant".
In a report from the New Zealand Herald, sex education will be part of the curriculum at Auckland's Concordia Institute of Business.
The 450 students will be required to attend these classes to help them "cope with the new-found freedom of living away from the controls of their parents", quoted the director of the institute Mr Isaac Phua.
"Lack of sexual knowledge is especially true for students from Asia, where formal sex education is not a norm at schools and where the topic is generally taboo", said Mr Phua.
He added: "Many international students flatted with people of the opposite sex, putting them in a situation where they "could easily fall into temptation."
"It gets dangerous when the only sex advice they can get is from their peers, which is why we want to introduce sex education as an extension of our pastoral care," Phua said.
An 18-year-old language student from Shanghai, Ms Mandy Zhou, said it was not culturally accepted for girls in China to talk about sex and it was not taught in Chinese schools. Those who did were regarded as "rude" or "cheap".
Auckland University researcher Elsie Ho, who led a 2007 national study on experiences of Chinese international students in New Zealand, said that many are inadequately prepared before they come to the country.
"Many of them feel they are old enough to look after themselves, but many don't know how to. They just think they can now drink, drive, gamble, without their parents there to say no", said Ms Ho.
