OC-14 “Groza”: the most unusual Russian gun
Posted on September 4, 2016 by konst4

This unusual gun had got its baptism of fire during the first Chechen campaign. Its main users were special units of the FSB, the internal forces and the army, and especially good this new gun showed itself in a very specific niche – covering of snipers.

Forever young AK. Receiver of Kalashnikov is easily recognizable in the profile of "Groza". There were some changes in the design of the body - butt of the rifle was removed and replaced with a compact recoil pad.

Russian special forces have developed an efficient algorithm: while the first number works directly as a sniper using DSR or another long-barreled gun, the second covers the first with a highly mobile, versatile and powerful complex, such as OC-14 "Groza".

"Groza" was under a great secrecy for a long time. The reason for this was a small number of copies produced and, consequently, limited distribution of the complex. A "PR" role for OC-14 played a computer game S.T.A.L.K.E.R., where "Groza" was called "Thunder-C14» and was one of the most powerful guns. Due to its specific appearance and good performance characteristics many players tried to get it. The interest in Tula’s sample among the audience of gun lovers, led to the appearance of its airsoft sample, produced by Asian manufacturers.

Do I need to say that the unique and not familiar battle transformer certainly deserves a review in "Popular Mechanics."

Kalashnikov inside

"Groza" was developed in the early 1990s by designers V.N. Telesh and U.V. Lebedev in Tula, in the Central Design and Research Bureau of Sporting and Hunting Weapons (CDRB SHW). The developers tried to create a melee weapon that combines a high penetrating ability and a modular design with maximum compactness and mobility.

Compact version of the Kalashnikov AKS-74U was the basis of the new complex. The length of this "landing" gun with folded butt of the rifle is a little less than half a meter and about 75 cm when expanded. To reduce the length of the gun, but "not to fold" the butt of the riffle, it was decided to use the bullpup scheme, in which the magazine is located behind handle, but not in front of it.

In order not to make significant changes in the design of arms body, recoil pad, that replaced the butt of the riffle, attached directly to the rear of the receiver. As a result, the most compact version of "Groza" was a little more than the length of 60 cm. As the gun was made from already used weapon it substantially unified two samples it means that 70% of their parts are interchangeable. And also with these 70 percent "Groza" inherited the legendary reliability of the AK.

Creating OC-14, the designers tried to better integrate grenade into the complex. The difficulty was in balancing of the weapon. From military units and law enforcement agencies they received a lot of complaints: when installing the GP-25 grenade launcher (they planned to use them for the OC-14) to the Kalashnikov its front end became too heavy, making it difficult to shoot from AK.

The problem was solved without weighing the rear of the gun, but making a grenade launcher easier, depriving a pistol grip, trigger guard and the trigger from it. There is only one trigger that "Groza" have, but the left side of the receiver has a rotary switch AV / GR, which lets you choose to fire with bullets or grenades.

Transformer is not a toy

Automaton-grenade launcher system is supplied in a hard carrying case.
