Today's My Paper reported results of a survey done among Singaporeans. The 2 highest values of Singaporeans are being filial and honest. The Top Priorities are:

1. Job Security
2. Housing.
3 Healthcare.
4 Caring govt.

Getting rich ranks low among Singaporeans. This is not a surprise to me. At a time when unhappiness among Singaporeans is at its highest, we are actually generating the most number of millionaires per capita in our history. The higher odds of getting rich means little to Singaporeans because at the end of the day, it is still a minority to make to the rich class. While we cannot begrudge those who got rich, we cannot steer our policies towards this end because it may not be aligned to the value system of Singaporeans and the general goals of Singaporeans.

Some of the priorities of Singaporeans such as affordable housing and healthcare is in conflict with wealth generation. Wealth generation favors those in control of capital....affordable housing means moderate increase in housing prices ...what developers and housing agents want are a hot property market to make the most money. Similarly, affordable healthcare means keeping much of the resources within the public healthcare system rather than the for profit wealth building private sector that will drive up cost of healthcare.

To meet the goals of Singaporeans policies have to be reshaped. While the big businesses and asset owning minority classes demand policies always be bias towards them and their influence and power ensure to a certain extent this will always be the case, govt has to be mindful that the majority will find ways to assert their power collectively. The PAP takes to regulating the Internet and use their dominant power and control of mainstream media to push for what is expedient to maintain their power structure. This only serves to cause more divergence in the goals of the people from that of the path taken by the govt. This misalignment is not good for Singapore. We must remain united as a people or see our country fall apart.

Human being do not really know what they want... When Singapore stop growing and peoples start to loss their jobs, during that time they will have difference priority... Now everybody have job and they think that if economy make a down turn, they will still be able to keep their current job...

What a load of crock....get rich and all those are non issues....another Pappie spin...

tis is total rubbish ... iz juz another attempt by ah loonz gahmen 2 condition ze tinking of sinkie peasants ...

dey dunwan u 2 ask 4 wage eise ... but dey want astronomical salaries 4 demselves ...

This is the most ridiculous survey findings I have read so far. Singaporeans are by far the most materialistic bunch I've known my entire life. Getting rich is all they know and desire.

When asked, many sinkies will say getting rich is not impt. But they buy weekend papers just for property listings and sunday times to read how people get rich. Fucking hypocrites.

Not important??? Yeah right!!

Ah Sam, there's a 35% chance that someone in that queue is non-Singaporean and taking away the chance of a local hitting the jackpot leh. Last time I heard got bangala kena jackpot 4 million when his bangala palace back home only cost him 10000. God is unfair.

MyPaper ought to know the obvious even before they embark on the survey. Those polled may have given the politically-correct answers but every true-blue sinkie knows the honest answer. :rolleyes:The more money the merrier! What a waste of time doing this type of survey!

Hear hear....I think on par with those PRCs from cities.
It's ironic that Hongkies in general though well known for being materialistic but they aren't soulless like sinkies.

Can't blame sinkies....they have pap as bright shiny examples.
Mammon is the religion of most sinkies.

The priority is to collect as many premium toothpicks as possible.

are you saying g.d.p growth and true pink singaporean employment rate are directly proportionate?

bro,
that's the priority of toothpick-zorro-lim, not mine for sure.

It's surprising that this hobby has not caught on among the porlumpars.
Perhaps they are just getting that teeny weeny bit more discerning these days.

knn if getting rich not a priority which means its perfectly fine to be poor?
