My final solution to all of sg’s problems

Just to show how incompetent the PAP is, I will show how just one insignificant, heartlander poly grad (me) can identify and come up with solutions by himself to most of our present problems. Feel free to add. Any party can grab these ideas and use them. I’m just happy if some of them become reality.

Economy
· Move away from service economy that rides on world trends to being a value-add economy that makes its own unique products that can’t be outsourced. Like Switzerland for its watches. More under ‘Technology’.
· Minimum wage for all workers local and foreign. The local will benefit in the end, as employers can no longer discriminate based on labour cost. Equal wages and employment rights/terms for all staff, local or foreign.
· All foreigners who want to work here must pass a basic English test.
· Foster local business, enable more locals to become their own bosses: slash rents for SMEs drastically. Enforce quotas for certain percentage of malls/shophouses to house local-owned stores. Enact laws that prevent MNC retailers from having many branches in a small area.
· Make foreign goods slightly more expensive than local ones to boost sales of local brands, as done in many countries.
· Become self-sufficient in our food supply. Support local organic farms in Lim Chu Kang. Buy land in foreign countries under a nationalized company and grow healthy food to support population.

Technology
· Invest in developments that make our immediate lives better – not the hot item of the day. I.e: car plating that deflects heat so you aren’t afraid to leave it in open air car parks. Air-cons in public trains that dispel body odours. Quiet bikes and electric cars. Smaller cars like those Japan latest models so more people can own a vehicle. Desalination technology. High-rise greenery. Ways to make use of small spaces.
· Kick-start an alternative energy industry. Make use of hdb roofs to collect solar energy and water.
· Transform into a high-tech, “automation nation”. We should rather spend millions on a robot than employ cheap labour that give us social problems. Heavy investment in technology to take over grunt jobs. Think dishwashing machines, vending machines for ordering food in eateries.
· Hire the large pool of tech-savvy locals for this industry. Design, engineer and continuous maintain this trade, catered specially for local circumstances. Tax credit and free warranties for businesses using new machines.

Immigration/foreign labour
· Stop Singapore from being seen as a stepping stone to better places. Admit immigrants who truly want a stake here. That which is hard to get, is coveted.
· Population re-adjustment to 3 MILLION.
· Immediate changes to immigration policy. FIVE YEARS to get PR. FIFTEEN YEARS to get citizenship. No big deal. In many Arab countries a foreigner can NEVER become a citizen. Impose a higher fee on anyone applying for PR or c’ship.
· Monitor marriages of convenience and protect our gullible citizens. Foreigners who marry in only get a ‘provisional PR’, and abide by the c’ship time requirements above.
· New PRs can only get their immediate family in, not their uncles, grandparents, in- laws etc. Their families do not get full PR rights immediately. PR’s whole family will be deported, and his PR revoked, if PR commits even a minor crime.

Social security
· Make CPF more flexible. Give option to withdraw every 5 years or when in need of the money. Let owner decide where to allocate money to OA, SA etc.
· Hire the best financial gurus in the world to get us 4% returns on all amounts. This makes people WANT to put CPF in.
· Unemployment benefits for any retrenched staff lasting up to a year, and decreasing as time goes by. Not applicable for those fired for non-performance or bad conduct. Revoked if the person refuses more than 3 jobs sourced for him.
· Shelters and soup kitchens for the most vulnerable and abandoned citizens. No one should be beggars or collecting cardboards.
· Employ more people as full-time staff working in these social security industries. Find ways to help the vulnerable even if they insist they don’t need help, due to ‘face’.

Defense
· NS is killing Singapore. NS must be abolished to free our men to compete with their counterparts worldwide in the new economy. They graduate faster, establish themselves faster, and retain their youthful idealism and entrepreneurial spirit this country badly needs.
· Abolishment to be done in phases to allow armed forces to transition into a volunteer army model. Attract a new breed of serviceman who joins for adventure, not to be a deadwood.
· Get heavily involved in UN peacekeeping missions, fight pirates, maintain peace in the region. Promotion to be based on experience and performance in these real hotspots, not paper qualifications.
· Maintain reserve regiments of people who are military nuts but don’t want to serve full-time. Organise camps for young people to teach them the very basics of rifle handling and urban warfare, via NCC etc.
· Shift doctrine emphasis from conventional warfare to counter-terrorist and intelligence training.
· Invest in cutting edge technology with Japan and USA, not buy 2nd hand hardware. Then one S’pore soldier will be as powerful as 10 enemy soldiers.
· Nurture a martial mindset for regulars with regular and practical training, like street survival, street martial arts, all kinds of weapon handling, disaster relief… we need soldiers who don’t flinch from challenges, not paper generals who are even scared of ah bengs.

Transport
· Nationalize crucial public services again – buses, MRT. Operate on a zero profit model, even free transport if possible.
· Retain COE and car tariffs. Use these surpluses to subsidize public transport costs and design.
· Heavy enforcement on bicycles. No more cycling on pedestrian walkways or roads, only in parks and bike paths. Each bike to be registered. Confiscation and fines for offenders. If young sinkees can get by without bikes, so can older sinkees and foreign workers.

The civil service
· Abolish the nepotistic scholarship system; civil service to recruit from the open market. Present system creates a new class of deluded fat cats who don’t know the real market.
· Revamp work culture of civil service. Use private sector rigour in evaluating people. Those who are liabilities should be kicked out. Promotion on merit and experience, not a pre-planned path for ‘scholars’.
· Revise salaries of top office holders, especially MPs and above.
· Crush nepotism and patronage. Set up a task force under PMO to receive such complaints. The person who tries to bank on his connection, and the VIP who tries to support him, will both be in trouble.

Human rights & the law
· Adhere to all UN human rights laws, like freedom of speech and assembly. Abolish ISA.
· Everyone equal before the law. Separate the judiciary and government. Set up a division of lawyers to represent low-income or lowly-educated people who need legal representation.
· Repeal unfair laws like 20 years’ jail for hitting MPs, or no penalty for hitting normal citizen.
· Take action against any establishment that discriminates against locals, like the restaurants at Chimes and certain nightclubs.
· Protection for all low-skill foreign workers. Same rights and redress as locals. Enact strict housing rules that prevent the current packing of so many people in small rooms. Ban transporting them with open-air lorries.
· Hit hard at human smugglers or errant employers, protect the low-skill foreign workers’ rights. This means employers will only use them when they really need them, not for the low wages or bending of laws.
· Foster academic freedom in all institutions.

Education
· Foster a spirit of intellectualism, curiosity, and risk taking. Ensure that students choose a path because of passion, not social engineering. Foster group success, not individual success and selfishness.
· Teach students to be good citizens as well through proper social studies and human rights/democracy education.
· Completely revamp syllabus up to secondary level. Teach skills that today’s youth badly need, like financial management, media studies, critical thinking, public etiquette.
· English as first language. Intense written and oral tests in English, like the show-and-tell system in the US.
· Reduce teacher-student ratio. Relief teachers of admin tasks and red tape. Use teachers’ assistants if necessary.
· Drastically reduce syllabus and workload so students have more time to explore issues for themselves. More all-rounded development.
· Free education with limits if you remain in sg to study, like sponsorship up to one year of repeat studies. Any more and you pay yourself. This prevents people from leeching on a fully free education and becoming 'career students'.
· Revise the positioning of ‘education hub’. Education is for nurturing future citizens, not money. Regulate the masses of foreign schools and paid degree programs strictly.
· Abolish the outdated scholarship system, replace with an interest-free loan for the brightest students to study at the best overseas unis. Anyone who applies and qualifies for a top overseas uni will get this loan. They are not obliged to return to serve any bond, but must repay the loan.
· Establish boarding schools for young students who come from troubled and unconducive families. Then they can focus on studies without harassment and lift themselves above their stations.
· Set up interest-free loans for all citizen students to use in big study-related expenses, exchange programs, excursions, overseas internships.
· Foreign students who want to study here should take standardized exams, like A levels, IB etc. Up to individual unis to provide scholarships, not taxpayers’ money. Abolish ‘study mama’ scheme.
· Parents must be persuaded play a bigger role in nurturing their children. Must work with schools, not throw them to schools and blame the schools for failure.
· Remove the silly quotas for doctors and lawyers.

The environment

· Foster a culture of conservation and self-sufficiency. Eg: the Philippines has already devised ways to compress all their garbage into recycled bricks.
· Recycling bins in all void decks, or pay money for households that give sorted rubbish for recycling. If karang guni can do for paper, why not for metal, plastic, glass etc?
· Stricter laws for ownership of pets. Regulate the pet trade. Harsher penalties for animal cruelty, close to punishing for the same crime on humans.

Healthcare
· Universal healthcare, or national health insurance scheme that lets you choose the amount of coverage. Pay more per month if you want insurance against more problems.
· Certain hospitals discriminate between private patients and those covered by govt subsidy. They go to different waiting rooms and sections. This must stop.
· Advocate preventive healthcare. Allowances must be given for preventive healthcare treatment, which should be equal to medical treatment. Eg: part of 14 days’ paid MC can be used for therapy treatment, fitness classes etc.
· Strict regulations against selling of fast food an unhealthy food. No advertising of such food to children.

Urban life

· Introduce ‘Independence scheme’ for public housing: cheap studio HDB flats for young people moving out from their families. Start with cheap monthly rentals, and give option of buying the flat later.
· Abolish income ceilings on flat purchasing; build categories of flats according to demand.
· Maintain ethnic quotas, but there may be a need to revise the classifications beyond the simplistic 4 races.
· Revise HDB prices to become cost-based. No easy solution to this, but continuing on present course is more disastrous.
· Build less crammed HDB flats. Don’t shortchange buyers with tiny rooms and lousy fittings.
· Limit foreigner eligibility to buy apartments, and control the tender of land for private apartments, which caused hordes of foreign labourers coming in and jacked up home prices.
· Strict regulations on comfort levels, like noise, smells, hygiene. Come down hard on Karaoke, loud vehicles.

Sports & Culture
· Rewrite a more accurate version of Singapore history, there is more to it than ‘the PAP story’.
· Pass a ‘Freedom of information act’. Any citizen can start a new newspaper, magazine, radio channel or TV channel.
· Stop the subjective funding of arts and cultural personalities through nepotism. Stop dictating how arts and culture develops. Make the society better and good art will emerge.
· Abolish foreign talent scheme. Employ the best local athletes directly and guarantee them pensions, so more locals will choose this as viable career.
· Give equal opportunities and funding to more obscure sports that we may actually be good in. Give extra support to our paraolympians who have given us glory even now.

Others
· Stricter regulations on religious organizations. Come down hard on rich and manipulative evangelist religions.
· Enforce secularism. Ban religious soliciting. Young minds are too vulnerable to decide what religion is right for them, or to reject religion.
· Legalize and regulate the vice trade and soft drugs. This actually protects citizens, wrests control from triads, and reduces illegal trafficking. So, an FL can't just come and work in sg on a 'social pass'. She needs a job offer from a legally registered brothel, a medical test, and a pass for 'personal services worker'.
· End the PAP’s politics of arrogance towards neighbours: revamp sg’s image to be like Switzerland, not Israel – a peace-loving neighbour who just wants to get on with life.
· From previous point, we can resolve outstanding issues with neighbours, like Malaysia rail, water, and extradition of corrupted Indonesian officials.

Angry one had obviously made a great effort in presenting his offer of an alternative. Besides criticizing, what have you got to offer?

How come not a mention of a solution to address the problem of a rapidly aging population and an extremely low national birth replacement rate ??

Actually i think he has a point. These are the 'best scenario' ideas - if sinkapore adopts them, we'll finally be on par with Switzerland. But i've always doubted sinkees' ability to embrace democracy and my view of a good society as listed above.....perhaps in a few decades.

Dear Angry_One,

Your suggestions are the right way. But you are not the first. There already are many such calls years ago.

Pappies will not do it. Here's why. If recommendations are followed the following will happen.

1) In the short term GDP will fall drastically. This will impact their justifications for their high salaries.

2) Lesser FTs will be hired leading to low take up rate for HDB leading to bigger price falls for property. It will still crash soon but if lesser FTs, bigger crash.

3) More S'poreans will be debt free. CANNOT! It is Debt that S'poreans fear most, hence keep voting for them in case lose jobs.

4) S'pore's cost of living will go down. Quality of living may increase. Again cannot, for a happy contented S'porean with very little worries may vote against them lun lun.

5) It would mean their POLICIES WERE WRONG ALL ALONG. Since when are they wrong? Even the stop at 2 children policy was never a mistake.

I know the PAP will never take up most of these ideas. But a lot can be good rallying calls for all the other parties. They're win-win and people-first solutions.....anyone who takes it up and publicizes it, can get loads of support.

Any party that presents a manifesto like this gets my vote. It will mean turning into another direction but what have we got to lose when where we are going does not make us feel too good either! And by the way, this thread is attracting a lot of guests' interest based on the viewers counter!

read this?

excerpt:

biology 101. you want the population to reproduce? keep the standards of living AFFORDABLE and CONDUCIVE. stress will keep the rate of population renewal low. the reasons why Singaporeans ain't producing, simple, HDB flats ain't affordable, costs of living is too high, stress level too high, who in the right frame of mind would dare bring his/her child into such stressful environment?
