MM Lee is well
MINISTER Mentor Lee Kuan Yew, the founder of modern Singapore, is frail but well, and intends to start travelling again, his son, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, said on Tuesday.
'The years take their toll,' the prime minister told Reuters about his father.
'He is well, he is frailer than before but his mind is still all there and he has been travelling and I think he intends to travel again'.
The elder Lee is 87 and his wife, Madam Kwa Geok Choo of 60 years died last month. Many Singaporeans worry that MM Lee may not survive his wife by long and are concerned about what effect that could have on government and policy. He was briefly admitted to hospital recently for a chest infection.
'Well, we will survive,' Mr Lee Hsien Loong said in an interview with Reuters. 'The system has been established, the people have been put in place. He gives us the benefit of his considerable experience and wisdom which we take very seriously.
'But finally we have to decide what to do and we have to carry the message to the population. It is our challenge and soon the challenge of the next generation of leaders, who have to emerge'. -- REUTERS
New generation of leaders by next GE
The prime minister said the next generation of leaders should emerge at the next general election, which must be held before February 2012.
'It's a very important theme, a very important concern, in this election that we bring in new candidates and new potential office-holders so that there will be a theme for Singapore to take the next step forward.
'I am 58, and Singapore should not have a prime minister who is 70 years old or more than 70 years old.
'And you have to be in sync with the new generation of people. You may be in touch but you are not of that generation'. -- REUTERS
