SINGAPORE: A US$35 million private jet owned by Malaysian financier Low Taek Jho, allegedly bought using funds taken from scandal-hit state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), is currently in Singapore, an aviation services firm told Reuters on Monday (Aug 13).
Low Taek Jho, also known as Jho Low, bought the Bombardier Global 5000 jet for US$35.4 million in 2010 using funds allegedly taken from 1MDB, the US Department of Justice (DOJ) has said.

Malaysia is seeking to repossess the jet which, according to some media reports, was grounded last year in Singapore.
Jet Aviation said on Monday a Bombardier Global 5000 with the same registration number as the one identified by DOJ was at its facility at Seletar Airport in Singapore.
A spokeswoman told Reuters the firm was "working closely with the local authorities". She declined to say how the firm came to be in possession of the aircraft.
Authorities in Malaysia and the United States are investigating how billions of dollars went missing from 1MDB. The DOJ says more than US$4.5 billion was misappropriated from the fund, with some of the money used to buy the private jet, a superyacht, Picasso paintings, jewellery and real estate.

Singapore, one of at least six countries investigating 1MDB, said in 2016 it had frozen about S$120 million of funds and properties belonging to Low and his immediate family.
"We have to bring it back," Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said on Sunday when asked if Malaysia would take possession of the Bombardier jet.
Last week, the US$250 million superyacht Equanimity, which the DOJ says was also bought by Jho Low, was handed over to Malaysia by Indonesia, which had seized the asset earlier this year.

A spokesman for Low's legal team has said the handing over of the Equanimity yacht to Malaysia was illegal and in violation of Indonesian and US court orders.
In civil lawsuits filed in the United States, the DOJ is seeking to seize assets that were allegedly bought with 1MDB money.

The scandal at 1MDB fully erupted in 2015 after media reports that hundreds of millions of dollars from the state fund were diverted to former prime minister Najib Razak's personal accounts.
Najib has consistently denied any wrongdoing, maintaining that those funds were donations from a Saudi royal, and that the bulk of them had been given back.
Low has been accused of being a key figure in the scandal and Malaysian authorities have issued an arrest warrant, but his whereabouts are unknown. Low, whose Malaysian passport has been revoked, has previously denied any wrongdoing.
A spokesman for Low, through his attorneys, on Monday said if Mahathir's intention to seize the private jet was "anything like his illegal seizure of the Equanimity", Mahathir will ignore ongoing legal processes and conduct a trial by media.
Mahathir's office was not immediately available for comment.

The 500ft vessel also comes equipped with a yellow submarine which can dive to 160ft below the water so he and his guests can escape attack.
There are also plans to include radar equipment designed to warn of incoming rockets, together with bullet-proof windows and armour plating around the 41-year-old Russian billionaire's cabin.
Its crew of 70 are rumoured to include former SAS and SBS personnel.
The yacht, named Eclipse, is being built secretly at the shipyard in Hamburg, Germany, which produced the World War II battleship The Bismarck.
It is the largest private yacht ever constructed and will be the pride of his fleet, which includes the 377ft Pelorus, 282ft Ecstasea and 160ft Sussurro.

The tight security measures are thought to be inspired by Mr Abramovich's concerns about sailing near the coast of Africa. It will also afford him extra protection should he decide to sail to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
Last month Somali pirates seized a Ukranian cargo ship carrying 33 Russian tanks and demanded a ransom.
There were 269 sea attacks last year which left five people dead and nearly 300 taken hostage, according to the International Maritime Bureau.
Even the Mediterranean is becoming less safe. In August, a gang boarded a £20 million yacht off Corsica and robbed guests and crew of £100,000.
Diane Byrne, editor of Power and Motoryacht News, said: "'Piracy isn't a problem limited to Somalia. It can and unfortunately does happen around the world."
As well as the safety measures, the yacht will have plenty of features to make Mr Abramovich and his girlfriend Daria Zhukova, 26, comfortable.
There will be cabins for 24 guests as well as a cinema, aquarium, disco, hospital, twin helipads and a side door which opens in dock to release a fleet of limousines.

Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich’s new $400 million, 555-ft. Eclipse, designed to be the world’s biggest (and so named because Abramovich desires that it overshadow all other boats at sea) will have a military-grade missile defense system to keep the oligarch safe.
Abramovich owns three other megayachts already: the 377 ft. Pelorus, the 282 ft. Ecstasea and the 160 ft. Sussurro but the Eclipse will be 25 ft. longer than Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid’s 530-ft. Platinum, currently ranked as the biggest yacht in the world.

The 377ft Pelorus will soon be playing second fiddle to Abramovich’s newest ship – the 550ft Eclipse
Secrecy surrounds the Eclipse, but sources tell the London Times that an antiballistic missile defense system is being installed by AST, a company with close ties to both the Blohm + Voss shipyard in Hamburg, where the yacht is being built, and the German defense ministry.
The Eclipse is being equipped with armor plating surrounding the bridge and Abramovich’s master suite, as well as bullet-proof windows. The yacht will also have a submarine for two, just in case pirates or other rapscallions make it on board. That doubles as an escape pod, as well as two helicopter pads.
Abramovich’s yacht will also have cabins for 24 guests as well as a cinema, aquarium, disco and hospital. But no weapons : under maritime law, private vessels are banned from carrying them. According to the International Maritime Bureau, pirates attacked 269 vessels last year, took nearly 300 hostages and killed five people.

He's used to having the best of everything, so it's unlikely Chelsea football club owner Roman Abramovich enjoyed battling for space to anchor his super yacht off the coast of St Barts.
The tycoon was forced to moor his white luxury yacht Eclipse just a stone's throw away from the huge blue ship owned by Qatar's Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani.
And with the two yachts anchored side by side in front of the harbor Gustavia on the Caribbean island, the battle was on for which billionaire has the nicest boat with the most luxury, helicopters, and jet skis.

Abramovich's £1billion yacht Eclipse is the world's largest privately owned yacht at 557ft long - beating the Al Mirqab which is a mere 436ft (but still longer than a football pitch).

Despite being smaller than the Eclipse, the Al Mirqab is still one of the world's largest and was named the second most beautiful yacht across the globe after it was built in 2008.
The yacht can accommodate 24 guests in 10 guest suites with two VIP suites for the yacht owner, the Emir of Qatar, as well as a further 55 rooms to house the staff needed to man the ship.
The suites are large and each has its own bathroom, living room and double bedroom.

The height of luxury: The Al Mirqab has 10 luxury guest suites that each come with its own bedroom, bathroom and living room
The boat boasts a cinema, outside bars, inside swimming pool, outside jacuzzi, sunbathing places and a helicopter pad. The yacht also has all the usual equipment for watersport entertainment and numerous jet skies and boys' toys.
But Abramovich, who was visiting the island for his annual New Year's Eve party at his Gouverneur Beach estate, has made sure his vessel is kitted out to be the ultimate in super yacht luxury.
The Eclipse has two swimming pools, two helicopter pads, a dedicated disco hall, around 30 cabins, a mini-submarine, and even a missile defence system.
The vessel has eighty members of staff to operate the craft who all wear discreet tan uniforms while on board.

Powerful: The Eclipse has two swimming pools, two helicopter pads, a disco hall, a mini-submarine and a missile defence system
When the ship was ordered the initial cost was estimated at around £330million, but by the time Mr Abramovich took delivery in 2010 it was spiralling towards the £1billion mark because of the extra luxury fittings and security measures.
Mr Abramovich, 46, who has six children with his first wife Irina and girlfriend Dasha Zhukova, uses his fleet of luxury boats to travel around the world and to get to his large estate on the island where he has hosted New Year's Eve parties for the last four years.
The world's rich and famous descend on St Barts for the bash - which often cost several million - at the 70-acre estate.
As Al Thani arrived in his ship in time for the party, it seems he may have been one of the many influential guests of Abramovich - now the 5th richest person in Russia and the 50th richest person in the world.
