The "Joint Hands" annual joint exercise began in 2007 and is regarded as a "barometer" of Sino-Indian relations. The first "joining hands" joint exercise was held in Kunming, China, and the second exercise in 2008 was held in Belgaum, Karnataka, India.

Later, because China refused to give the Indian military commander in the Indian-controlled Kashmir region a "ordinary visa", India canceled the next joint exercise. The third joint exercise was held in Chengdu in 2013, but the scale was only a few hundred people.
Considering that both China and India are big countries with a million troops, the small scale of the "joining hands" joint exercise is considered to be more symbolic. The “Join Hands” joint exercise was held in 2014, 2015 and 2016.
