Police in Munich have warned people to stay away from the city's main railway station and a station in the city's Pasing district because of a "serious, imminent threat" of a terror attack.
Police said on Facebook that according to "serious information, there will be an attack tonight".
German news agency dpa said one station had been evacuated and trains would no longer stop there.
Two Munich trains stations — Hauptbahnhof and Pasing — were evacuated, police told NBC News.
The warning came shortly before the city celebrated the start of the New Year.
The nature of the threat and who made it were not immediately clear, but police said they were investigating potential suspects. They said they would provide updates on social media.
A statement read: "We have concrete evidence that we cannot sweep under the carpet. Based on information available and evaluated by us as credible."
Actual lead that in #Munich a terror attack is planned. Please avoid crowd gatherings as well as the central train station and the Pasinger train station," read a translation of the German tweet.
It added: "Pasinger and central stations have been evacuated. Trains are no longer running. Please follow police instructions."
Another tweet from the police said: "We note explicitly once again that we take the threat very seriously. Please remain alert."
Both the main city station and Pasing have been evacuated and all trains have been stopped.
The warning came with Europe on a terror alert with the Belgian authorities already having cancelled the New Year's Eve celebrations.
Police in Munich had already announced that they would be stepping up security in the city, which is one of Germany's most popular tourist destinations.
