HONG KONG: Hong Kong broadcaster Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB) announced on Wednesday that 104-year-old Sir Run Run Shaw will step down as Chairman of the Board on December 31, after serving at the broadcast giant for over forty years.

TVB's 71-year-old Executive Deputy Chairman Dr Norman Leung will take over as chairman from January 1.

Knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1977, TVB co-founder Shaw was instrumental in the broadcaster's transformation from a local broadcaster with 200 staff in 1967 to one of the biggest media companies in the region today.

In recognition of his service to the company, TVB said Shaw will be appointed Chairman Emeritus of TVB following his retirement, but will neither be considered a member of the board nor draw a salary.

Shaw may have retired from TVB, but he is still very much involved in showbiz – Shaw's business holdings have a majority stake in the massive Shaw Studios film production facility in Hong Kong's Tseung Kwan O, which recently hosted singer CoCo Lee's wedding celebrations.
