Heavy vehicle firms urged to use telematics device

IN the interest of improving road safety, the Singapore Transport Association (STA) is encouraging companies operating large vehicles to adopt an intelligent, vehicle-mounted system that monitors the driving habits of their drivers.

It has teamed up with Spring Singapore, which will subsidise the cost of adopting the Mobileye Telematics Advanced Driver Assistance System through its Capability Development Grant.

The system, launched yesterday, aims to reduce the number of road accidents involving drivers in the transportation and logistics sector in the following ways.

Firstly, the device - consisting of a windshield-mounted smart camera and display screen - warns drivers of imminent collisions with vehicles ahead by calculating the distance and relative speed of both vehicles.

The real problem of these heavy vehicles is not so much accidents or collisions with vehicles ahead but more of failing to keep a proper lookout and no regard for the small guys like motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians.

Possibly a waste of $$$ because:
Overdependence might cause driver to be less attentive due to overdependence on electronic system.

New system cannot override driver actions: unknown if the footage can be seized in accident by authorities: greatest joke would be if it could be erased if lorry driver is guilty thus making the authorities none the wiser in case of an accident.

Money would be better spent on uncomplicated camera system so as to allow accident or investigators to reach better conclusions and solutions to ensure safe road use.
