Oppositions ready to form Government by next GE: Chiam See Tong

SINGAPORE - With the progress made by the Opposition so far, there is a "very strong chance" Singapore could see a new Government come the next General Election (GE) after the May 7 polls, said Opposition veteran Chiam See Tong.

Speaking after a walkabout at Toa Payoh on Saturday morning, Mr Chiam, who is leading a team from the Singapore People's Party to contest Bishan-Toa Payoh group representation constituency (GRC) in the upcoming GE, said the Opposition is prepared to be the alternative government, if that is what people want.

"Maybe for this round it's too soon. The next round, the Opposition will prepare… and they will respond accordingly," said Mr Chiam, who was responding to challenges from the People's Action Party on Opposition readiness to form a government.

However, a Government formed by the Opposition did not mean Singapore's stability would be threatened, he stressed.

"It doesn't mean we will change everything if we become the Government," he said. "It will be a smooth transition… it won't affect the stability of Singapore. Singapore shall remain secure. And that is a promise of the Opposition."

If they win, they need to prove they are worthy of re-voting. So they need to work for the people and keep all election promises.

This time round, HDB upgrading does not play a big part. First, a lot of estates has already been upgraded in the past decade, what else can PAP dangle? Gold pavement? Second, people these days don't view upgrading as major issue. What is at stake now is Singaporeans losing jobs to foreigners, casinos breaking up family, high priced HDB flats. Certainly not upgrading. With high prices, how to buy flat. With no flat, who cares about upgrading? But then a lot of estates has been upgraded.
