MALLISS, Germany, May 26 (UPI) -- Police in a German city said apparent robbers trying to blast their way into a bank misjudged their explosives and left the building in ruins.

Investigators in Malliss said the robbers attempted to blast open the doors of Valksbank early Tuesday and apparently planned to cart away an ATM with a low-loading truck, Britain's Daily Mail reported Wednesday.

However, the explosion, which police said appears to have been created using gas cylinders, sent splinters of hot metal into the truck's fuel tank, causing the vehicle to catch fire.

Police said the bank's safe and cash machine were found intact within the ruins of the building.

"They really botched this one. We are just so lucky at the timing and the fact that no one lived in this largely commercial area," a police spokesman said. "Initial examinations indicate a gas bomb of approximately 10 times the amount of power needed to open up the cash machine."

"As it was they brought the roof down upon it, thus preventing them from getting to it or stealing money from it," the spokesman said.

DEREK SCALLY in Berlin

MARIO KITZMANN prided himself on being a deep sleeper – at least until 2am on Tuesday. While he slept in the eastern German village of Malliss, thieves slipped into the bank across the street from his apartment. Their plan: blast the bank’s safe from its base and carry it away. But things didn’t work out that way.

“The bang was so loud that I jumped up and stood in the bed,” said Mr Kitzmann (32). He ran to his window and saw police cars and fire engines screech to a halt across the road in the bank car park. Or, to be accurate, the car park of the former bank.

The thieves had over-estimated the amount of explosives they would need for the job and, instead, blew up the building.

The single-storey building was reduced to its foundations: lumps of wall, piles of fibreglass insulation and wooden beams were all flung up to 50m from the site.

Police went to work immediately with sniffer dogs in case the thieves were trapped beneath the rubble, but the search ended inconclusively. Police believe the gang fled the scene after the explosion, leaving behind them, in flames, the red forklift truck intended as the getaway vehicle.

Police said the village had a lucky escape: the explosion severed the adjacent gas mains and could have caused a second, even more violent explosion.

“We’ve never had anything like this that I can remember,” said local police officer Ingo Renk. “The main thing is there were no fatalities.” As dawn broke, bank manager Volker Mahnke showed up at the site and began salvaging loose papers and files from the wreckage of his former branch.

The Volksbank sign was blasted clear of the site and, as firemen began to clear the rubble, they made an extraordinary discovery. Standing amid the ruins, utterly untouched, was the bank’s safe.

“I’ve never experienced anything as audacious as this, we have yet to digest it all,” said Mr Mahnke. “And I have to call the manufacturer of the safe and thank him for doing good work.”

Would-be bank robbers in Germany miscalculated the amount of explosives needed to open the front door and instead leveled an entire building, Die WeltOnline reports.

The safe and the ATM machine survived intact, however, and the robbers apparently fled without taking any money from the bank branch in Malliss.

Police initially thought one of the robbers might have been buried in the rubble, but search dogs turned up nothing, Die Welt reports.

In addition, police found a stolen delivery van on fire outside the building. They surmise that the thieves brought it along to use to cart off the ATM machine.

An attempted bank heist in Germany became an epic failure when the would-be robbers miscalculated the amount of explosives it would take to get the job done.

Instead of merely blowing open the front entrance, the blast leveled the entire building, reducing it to rubble, AFP reported. No one was hurt in the explosion Tuesday, although nearby buildings and parked cars were damaged by flying debris. The bank is (or was) located in the rural village of Malliss.

Ironically, the bank’s cash machine survived intact, and police said no money was taken, according to the BBC. Police also discovered a construction vehicle nearby, which was believed to have been the getaway vehicle — but that, too, was in flames.
