China's GWM Flaunts Two 8-Cylinder Engines at CES Bengt Halvorson - Car and Driver
  • Great Wall Motors, a Chinese automaker, showed two eight-cylinder engines at CES this week.
  • The 2.0-liter flat-eight makes 154 hp and 140 pound-feet of torque and powers the Souo S2000 motorcycle, but it could be fitted to a future production car.
  • GWM's twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 has been shown before, and it's unclear what the engine will be used for, but a premium brand is on the horizon.
Despite the tariff and trade drama of the past year, China's Great Wall Motors is back for CES 2026 this week, with U.S. aspirations and two eight-cylinder engines on display.

Known as one of the more ostentatious of China's core domestic automakers, with an emphasis on SUVs and a full line of all-wheel-drive vehicles, Great Wall brought its flat-eight engine back to CES with a unique news twist: It's also likely to put the engine into a car or SUV.

Great Wall confirmed that the flat-eight isn’t intended only for motorcycles. "We can put this V-8 engine in other vehicles in the future," summed representative Shenghao Tang, at GWM's stand. "This is not just for motorcycles... it's for cars."
