A man was charged in court on Tuesday with causing the death of a motorcyclist by dangerous driving and injuring the pillion rider.

Bian Yang, 32, is said to have beaten the red light at a signalised cross junction of Mandai Road near Bukit Timah Expressway. As a result, he hit Malaysian Aravinthan Ganesan, 21, who was turning right into the expressway, causing his death on Aug 24 last year.

He allegedly caused serious hurt to the pillion rider, Ms Sasikala Krishna Murthi, 23, by doing an act so rashly as to endanger life that morning.

If convicted of causing death, he could be jailed for up to five years. For causing grievous hurt by doing a rash act, the maximum penalty is four years' jail and a $10,000 fine.
