A motorcyclist lost his leg in an accident on the PIE yesterday evening. His limb had become sandwiched between a bus and his bike, severing it above the knee. Eight people in total stopped to assist him, and his leg was placed in the yellow bag in the picture.
The accident had caused a massive jam on the PIE yesterday evening, as the man could not be moved before an ambulance arrived to move him to NUH for treatment.
STOMPer Alan, one of the men who stopped to aid the man, wrote:
"A motorcyclist crashed on the PIE while trying to navigate around an SMRT bus on the PIE yesterday.
"The incident occurred near the Bukit Timah exit on the PIE, after Eng Neo Avenue.
"The biker's leg had been caught between his bike and the bumper of the bus and his leg was completely severed above the knee.
"You can see the man's leg in the yellow plastic bag by his side, while the stump was placed onto his helmet to elevate the injury to slow bleeding.
"We managed to stop the blood eventually from flowing using a tourniquet.
"One Eurasian-looking man even volunteered to go fetch ice from a nearby petrol station to slow down cell death in the amputated limb, in the hope that it could be reattached.
"Unfortunately, he would not be able to make it in time, and the ambulance was already on the way already, so we decided he should not go.
"The man stayed strong and conscious while a total of eight good Samaritans stopped their vehicles to help, among them off-duty SCDF personnel and medically-trained people.
"It was an unfortunate incident. However I realise there were many guys out there who are ready for an emergency at any time.
"Many of the guys who came forward were from the Civil Defence and one guy helped to control traffic, and kept calling to check on the location of ambulance. All of these people were off-duty, but they stepped forward to help with their skills because the situation called for it.
"I salute all of them for the bravery. It's people like these who make Singapore a better home for all of us."
