There was this expat who lamented during a meeting that whatever the Singapore govt touches productivity would go south and he cited the figures that most are familiar with in recent years and then he made a curious remark that it went against the culture of the locals.

After the meeting I asked him what he meant by that and he said that Singaporeans were notoriously productive and he felt it was the govt that was screwing things up. He told me to go down to Harbourfront and checked out this shop - YG Mobilephone accessories on the ground floor and an Indian money changer next to it.

And I did today and what a magnificent show it was. There was this young girl in her early 20s, who I suspect is a Malaysian Chinese that was handling the sale of Sim cards and top-ups. She was multi-tasking and handling as many as 3 customers simultaneously. She was zapping passports and ID cards, using a shop mobile to do top ups and asking fresh customers to write their mobile numbers for top up on an exercise book. As she completed a top-ups, she used a pen and cancelled the number on the book and moved to the next number. She was also opening customers' phones to insert SIM cards and configure it. Most of the customers appear to be seamen and foreigners. I asked an Indonesian customer about the shop and he told me that it was the best and everyone in the Ferry fleet and cruise lines know about this shop. He said there was another shop on the same floor that would cheat the cruise passengers.

Popped over to the money changer who had a small booth nearby and he had 2 currency sorting machines which not only worked out the numbers it checked for fake notes. Asked him about it and he told me it was very expensive but worth every penny both for productivity and security. To make it clear, in his small booth he had not one but 2 expensive machines.

So I called the Expat and he told me that these sectors are not touched by the Govt and they do a better job. I had to agree.

Not the Govt. per se but perhaps big organizations. Even MNCs are plagued by poor productivity.

It's the same the world over. The larger the organisation the more easy it is to hide within the system or to rise to to prominence with song and dance routines rather than by doing real work.

I should have made it clear. He was not referring to the public service but govt GLCs and where goverment was assisiting or shepharding the bigger SMEs. He cited examples like Esmaco.

scrooballs this story just doesn't cut it and talking about a teleco shop with a mudland chinese in work and a money changer = govt untouched industries are still good? WTF?

For a moment I thought you are discussing who is having more kids here! :D

Best joke is they got all these uncles and aunties minding the turnstiles at hospitals! People want to scan their IC themselves also cannot! U got to give them to scan to open the turnstiles !

Another joke is u got all these self checkouts machines at NTUC Fairprice but they still employed couple of staff stationed there. So, what is it ? Self checkout or not??

tis shows dat ze organisations involved r highly creatif n able 2 tink outta box ...

wen ur machines malfunction or cant wok properly, ze soln of normal pipz is 2 repair or replace dem ... dey tink outta box employing solns dat haf nutting 2 do wif machines ...

This is exactly the point he was making. Anyone looking at it will know that this is not right. In the old days, there used to be a fulltime lift attendent who was the only one to press the buttons. So why are we going back to the old days.

I guess we don't realise how bad we are backtracking until an outsider points it out.

Actually they made things worse than before! Now they invested in all these self checkout machines but instead of reducing the people... They kept them! Net effect is worse than if u didn't do anything!

Why don't you stick to posting your great photographs instead of trading insults which you aren't very good at.

Seriously doubt the uncles and aunties know anything else besides grabbing your IC to scan and open turntiles. U want them to 'troubleshoot'!! Wait long long!

Bro, I was actually lost because everything was around prepaid ( no idea about top-up process etc) and they all looked like foreign customers and the trade was more than brisk. I was wondering why they were even handing over their passports until I read a government notice on ID needed for SIM purchase. I could sense there was lot of trust as people just turned up to buy iphone SE, Samsung and the likes.

With that kind of sevice and trust shown, I would certainly recommend them.

You are one of the vets here bro and I can't believe a subject like this would have appeared in the forums 10 years ago. Really sad.

I am beginning to wonder if these are the underemployed that are shown officially as the employed amd makes our PM looks good.

They got a massive prob and paradox to resolve. They want to automate but can't retrench? On paper these people r supposed to move to some other jobs that require human labor but in reality these people can't move anywhere. By keeping them, they push the productivity down but at least kept the pretence of full employment. As I said... Its complicated !
