Vietnam kicked US military butt mainly because the Yanks were politically troubled by this war. There were protests at home and divided views in congress. They couldn't find a justifiable reason for their involvement and eventually pulled out. No doubt North Vietnam and the Vietcong put up a strong fight with the backing of commie powers PRC and USSR, the Yanks were not strongly willed nor convinced to fight. US military think-tanks had to review their stance in conflicts and this became apparent at their next major conflict in Iraq.
