ELECTRONIC panels at bus stops will show more accurate bus arrival times in the future.

Currently, the system does not take into account traffic conditions on the ground so some commuters end up waiting longer than they think they will.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) on Thursday said it is now working with IBM Research to tweak the system to enable it to predict traffic flow.

This is among a host of transport-related projects that the LTA is embarking upon with various partners, some of which it unveiled on Thursday.

The electronic display panels are currently available at 50 bus stops in areas like Orchard Road. They display the waiting time, in minutes, for each bus service stopping at the bus stop.

The panels, which use Global Positioning System data from buses on the roads to predict their arrival times, are updated every minute.

However, commuters have long complained that the arrival times are not accurate. In some cases, the panel shows that a bus service has arrived when it has not.

Besides upgrading the panels, the LTA is also working on several other transport-related projects with five research institutions.

Memorandums of Collaboration on the projects were signed on Thursday by LTA and five institutions.

The institutions are the National University of Singapore (NUS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore Management University, Agency for Science, Technology and Research, and Institute of Systems Science (ISS).

Few months ago that was the most inaccurate machine I had ever seen and had a good laugh. Even an amateur website showed more reliable info. Hope that it is better now.
