Teo Ser Luck did not make comments on foreign worker dorm beds: MOM
The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) says an administrator for its Facebook page had written a caption for a photo which was slammed as "insensitive" and a "joke".

SINGAPORE: A controversial comment on beds at a foreign workers' dormitory, was not made by the Minister of State for Manpower Teo Ser Luck, his ministry said on Friday (Dec 18).

The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) issued a clarification on Facebook after the post went viral. It showed a photo of Mr Teo on a bed without a mattress, along with caption: "Quite comfy! I learnt that some workers prefer to sleep without a mattress as they are used to it back in their home country. They find it more comfortable and cooler too!"

The post was slammed as "insensitive" and a "joke" by some, although some praised Mr Teo for trying to at least trying to experience for himself how foreign workers live.

MOM said the Facebook post and captions were put up by an administrator for its Facebook page. "MOS Teo did not make those comments. We regret the unintended implications, and any misunderstanding that the post has caused. To avoid further misrepresentation, we have removed all the captions from the Facebook post," it said in a statement on Friday.

"Foreign workers have contributed much to the development of Singapore. The visit to the dormitory is to show our appreciation, and our care and concern for their wellbeing from housing to food, and exercise to entertainment in their dormitories. It is unfortunate it was over shadowed by this turn of events," MOM added.

The photo was uploaded a week ago, but garnered more attention online, after Mr Teo wrote a blogpost on Thursday reflecting on his visits to foreign worker dorms ahead of International Migrants Day.

Mr Teo himself did not comment on the incident, however he left a comment on the Facebook post in response to a foreign worker who complained of hot and stuffy conditions in his dormitory.

The comment by the worker read: "One room 12 person but only 2 fan. Is it possible to sleep in a mattress with 2 fan only? Dormitory management never allow more than 2 fan in the room (sic)." Mr Teo requested that the man drop him a personal message on Facebook, writing: "We will see what can be done."

Actually what the hell is wrong with his statement? I don't find it offensive at all.

Even foreign worker comment can upset minister, wonderful. Singaporeans protest and protest, fall on deaf ears.

"Foreign workers have contributed much to the development of Singapore

But sinkies serve NS, die and give sweat and tears can still be call lazy and need to be more productive.

poor administrator not Christmas present for you!!!

Is it for real? That every minister, MOS and even new MPs, has administrator to manage their FB?

These people must be very busy or IT nuts, or so rich to be able hire a administrator to update their accounts!

dat foto oso fotochopped 1 la ...

Comments like "We will see what can be done" are the safest and useful for those who tend to put their foot in their mouth. They rank on par with "We take this matter very seriously and will look into it" or "We will let due process take its course". ;)

whats the point of having these fucktards ministers if we just have cheap $10 an hour assistance and administrators to think and do and say everything for them?

might as well just put a cardboard cutout in each and every seat in parliament and hire a bunch of animators to animate their hands and mouth movements like a south park or dreamworks cartoon.

Credits he claimed ...criticisms, he makes some scapegoat take it. What a scumbag.

Their contribution is to work to build whatever it is needed to build & they are earning an income to feed a family back home & we contribute to the GDP's of those countries....they did come here & work FREE!...

We do not need to bully them...but they are to be treated fairly & squarely & as 3rd class workers from 3rd class countries...& that is all....why need to highlight their contribution?

How about the generations of National Slavery people....all these politicians like Teo Ser ....whatever...are just doing lip service & playing to the slave gallery!...what a humbug!

cheap cheap admin, saving money for sinkaporlah

A real man come out and explains what happens. Whether it was a mistake or intentional or what. Not let the MOM spokesman try and explain. Not let the FB administrator take the fall. He is a typical PAP asshole and coward. they all are.

MOM is neutral and unbiased, making her especially suitable for dealing with misunderstandings like these. Of course he did not make those comments, so why need to deny what was not said and repeat it again?

It is a honest mistake. We will see what can be done ... to the Administrator.

What really happens inside " Fxxx ! What can be done ?! Tell the Admin, he can go on permanent leave ! "
