With the claimed low resident unemployment of 3%, it is actually much higher
if we regard national service as NOT employed. This is in line with other
countries where conscription is not counted as employed. However, NSF is defined
as “employed” by MOM’s definition.

For our young (15-24 yrs), we have unemployment of 8.9% in 2012. If we do
count national service as “unemployed”, that would be adding between 30-50k more
headcounts into the unemployment data. That would double the resident
unemployment from 60k to 110k.

THE RESIDENT UNEMPLOYMENT IS POTENTIALLY AT 6%. Just by looking at MOM’s
definition alone.

1) Employment Definition is found on page A2, in Appendix A.

2) Unemployment by Age (Chart 10) can be found on page 14.

Do you think it is accurate to compare Singapore’s unemployment rate with
that of other developed countries when other countries do not have NSFs to add
into their ‘employed’ labour figures?

PM Lee said that Singapore’s unemployment rate of 3% was “safe” comparing it
with other countries that have 6~8%. In fact, Singapore could have an
unemployment rate as high as 6% if you take out NSFs.

And if so, why are NSF not paid a salary with proper CPF contribution if they
are “employed”?

Is the MOM playing with statistics to give Singaporeans a false sense of
security?

National Service

Dear TRE,

I refer to this article:

http://www.tremeritus.com/2013/10/04/mom-statistics-include-full-time-nsfs/

How can NS be counted as employed when they are not even paid a proper salary
but rather a token allowance???

I vividly remember MINDEF justifying the low allowance of NSF compared to the
rather high pay of regulars doing the same job by asserting that NSF only get an
allowance rather than full pay because NS is considered a service to the nation.
How then can MOM come back and classify NS as “employed”?

If National Service is considered as employed in the statistics, then they
should be paid regular pay, and not allowance.

I remember a few years ago when people requested for National Servicemen to
be paid more, the excuse given was that they are serving a national duty, and
the money given is an allowance, not salary.

This government is simply snaking around the figure to their fairytale,
thinking we are fools.

TO MINDEF : Where is my CPF contribution? MINDEF you think this is funny?

AT AGE 18 YOU FORCE ME TO SERVE NATIONAL SERVICE AND MOM SAYS I AM EMPLOYED.
AND YOU DON’T PAY ME CPF CONTRIBUTION?

SERIOUSLY YOU BUNCH OF NO EXPERIENCE SCHOLARS SITTING DOWN THERE WEARING YOUR
SO CALLED RANKS WITH NO TRACK RECORD THINK THIS IS FUNNY?

WHERE IS MY MONEY?

PLEASE PAY ME!

Do you know that for those who are unemployed, they are classified as self
employed? I have friends who have received letters from CPF board informing them
of above status.

If PR can be considered as S’porean, anything else also can do lah…!

Unemployment rate could even go up further if you will to take away those
scam/fake employees as old as 80yrs old being used to qualify for FW by paying
them CPF contributions at the lowest possible rate.

Many SMEs and small retailers are just doing that till now. Our govt is
obviously out of touch!

If you really wish to see the opposition win more votes at the next GE, you and I should first start by encouraging Pinky's LEEgime to bring in many more foreign PMETs, hastening the realization of the Asean Economic Community, making Sinkieland the only country in the world with the most number of billionaires, giving more scholarships to foreign students instead of local ones, allocate more places at local universities for foreigners....
