Molester gets jail and caning

A MAN was given the maximum two years' jail and six strokes of the cane on Thursday for molesting a boy. Terence Thaver, 44, admitted to kissing the eight-year-old boy at an activity centre in the city area between May and June 2008. As a manager there, his duties included supervising the staff of the centre and programmes. Thaver, the court heard, committed the offence within a year of his release from an eight-year and 24-stroke sentence for outraging the modesty of four primary schoolgirls. He was sentenced for those offences in 2001.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Terence Chua told District Judge Thian Yee Sze that the boy frequented the centre while his mother worked nearby. Thaver, he said, had been instructed by the chairman of the centre, run by a church, not to interact with children without supervision. Investigation showed that on one evening sometime in May or June 2008, Thaver took the victim to his office, locked the door and turned off the light. There he hugged and kissed the victim and told him not to tell anybody about what happened. He then gave him sweets.

Convicted molester did it again

<!-- by line --> By Elena Chong

AN SMS circulating among children at a neighbourhood outreach centre came to the attention of a Member of Parliament, and this led to the arrest of a repeat child molester. The text message alleged inappropriate conduct between a staff member and an eight-year-old boy. On Thursday, Terence Thaver, 44, who had similar convictions for molesting young girls nine years ago, was given the maximum of two years' jail and six strokes of the cane after admitting to kissing the boy on the lips between May and June 2008. At the time, he was the manager of a church-run centre in the central area, which the boy attended.

He took on the job after his release from an eight-year and 24-stroke sentence for outraging the modesty of four schoolgirls.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Terence Chua said the victim, now 10, called Thaver 'uncle' and sometimes 'daddy'. Despite being instructed not to interact with children without supervision, Thaver took the boy into his office, locked the door and hugged and kissed him on the cheeks and lips. Afterwards he would give the boy sweets and ask him not to tell anyone about what had happened.
