Molester employer jailed and caned

A PLUMBER who molested his Indonesian maid in 2009 was sentenced to two years' jail and five strokes of the cane on Friday.

The 44-year-old man had admitted to moving his hand under the 24-year-old's clothing to outrage her modesty at his home in the east of Singapore on Sept 30, 2009.

The court heard that he told the maid - who had worked for him for about 1 1/2 years - to bring his dinner into his bedroom that evening.

When she did so, he locked the door and grabbed her hands. She tried to move away from him but he pushed her onto the floor and molested her.

The victim was struggling throughout but could not break free. She also tried to shout but the accused used his left hand to cover her mouth.

After about a minute, he stopped when someone knocked on the door.

The victim took the opportunity to escape into the computer room and locked herself inside.

Another similar charge was taken into consideration.

He could have been jailed for up to two years or fined or caned or received any combined punishment.

SINGAPORE: A 44-year-old plumber was given the maximum two years' jail for molesting his former Indonesian maid. The stocky, fair-complexioned man will also receive five strokes of the cane.

The man, who pleaded guilty to one count of molest on Tuesday, admitted that he had outraged her modesty in his Simei flat on September 30 2009.

Channel NewsAsia is not naming him to protect her identity.

He had asked the maid to bring his dinner into a bedroom and when she complied, he locked the door before pushing her down. The plumber then pinned the 24-year-old woman to the floor and molested her.

Her ordeal only stopped when somebody knocked on the door. The maid bolted out and locked herself inside another room.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Lee Zu Zhao said the maid is now working for another family in Singapore.

Prior to this, the man was fined S$2,000 in 2001 for insulting another woman's modesty.

Before handing out the sentence, District Judge Eddy Tham said that the man had not learnt his lesson.

He originally faced two charges of molest but one of them was taken into consideration during sentencing.
