As expected, students are being forced by MOE to filled up the empty seats at YOG due to cool public interest. If ticket sales continue to be poor, the government will most probably roped in MINDEF, SCDF, nursing homes, welfare Homes, PAP kindergartens, RC senior citizen clubs to fill up more empty seats. Now who says YOG will be a failure with all these ready audiences waiting to be mobilized?

Schools create buzz for YOG

Students to get tickets, lesson plans to be adjusted

SINGAPORE - Tweaking lesson plans, shelving exams and adorning schools with memorabilia from the Youth Olympic Games (YOG). There is no way even non-athletes won't be getting into the mood for the event, judging by what schools are doing to electrify the atmosphere before the Games.

With 15 days to go, primary to junior college students will be exposed to the Olympic buzz in and out of their classrooms. Schools are also gearing up by giving tickets to students and adjusting lessons plans.

For example, Crescent Girls School will be flexible and do away with tests for those involved, while Catholic High Primary will also ensure that lessons are not too taxing for their students from Aug 14 to 26 - the duration of the Games.

To generate more buzz, all schools will screen YOG videos and play theme songs on their public TV screens and through their audio channels. Banners and posters to announce match fixtures and students' involvement in the events will be put up on notice boards and along walkways. Local and overseas athletes have also been invited to speak to students during the assembly period.

Many schools are leveraging on the timely National Day celebrations to tie in with the YOG as well.

At Millennia Institute, the school's sports leaders will be leading students in the YOG cheer, while at Northlight School, close to 300 people - including parents - will be invited on Aug 8 to cheer on three of its students acting as torch-bearers.

The Ministry of Education (MOE) said that schools are encouraged to tap the games for a good learning experience for their students. "Many of them have also taken the initiative to organise YOG-related educational activities for students in the lead-up to the games," said the MOE.

The MOE has bought 87,000 tickets which have been distributed to schools.

Tickets are given according to the country which they have been partnered with so that schools can help cheer on the respective athletes. But for the finals, tickets will be allocated based on the schools' choices, said the MOE.

At Temasek Polytechnic, which has about 2,000 students and staff involved as volunteers, registrar Sharon Soh said that the academic calender has been modified to create a longer break period so that students can take part without cutting classes.

Students from the Institute of Technical Education, who will be on vacation, will be watching the semi-finals and finals of selected games with the 600 tickets bought by their school.

wahlaneh...
my next door neighbour uncle refused to let his son get involved in yog.
he said, "in singapore, study n work more important. exercise is eng eh tai jee (do when u r free)."
he's right mah!

If ticket sales continue to be poor

They should not expect tickets to sell like hot cakes. YOG is not the Olympics. It is Youth Olympic. So nobody really want to take leave from work, pay money to watch the games.

108,000 kids compelled to serve YOG as free labour

108,000 kids along with 6800 teachers and staff are being compelled by MOE to serve for YOG. $390 million spent and what do they get in return? COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT PROGRAMME HOURS! This is as good as free labour. Why are our students being treated like slaves time and again for public events like NDP, Chingay, Community walks, YOG etc? If you want labour, pay for it. Stop misusing students and national servicemen for your own agenda.

Letter from Sum Chee Wah Director, Education Programmes Ministry of Education (MOE)

05:55 AM Jul 29, 2010

WE REFER to the letters by Mr Joseph Lim ("YOG holidays for all students?", July 19) and Ms Stephanie Yeo ("Schools, be more YOG friendly", July 21).

The Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) provides a unique learning opportunity and MOE is committed to enabling our students and educators to benefit from this experience.

Students have been participating actively in various programmes organised by MOE and its partners. Students are learning about the Olympic values and forging friendships with their international counterparts through the Culture and Education Programme and the Friends@YOG twinning programme.

Local and international students who attended the Singapore 2010 Friendship Camp and the Singapore 2010 Youth Sports Conference experienced innovative activities that inspired them to adopt the Olympic values. MOE has also purchased 87,000 tickets for students to watch the Games.

In all, more than 108,000 students and 6,800 teachers and MOE staff will participate in the Games and related activities. All student volunteers for the YOG will be awarded Community Involvement Programme hours for their contributions in the YOG.

MOE has rescheduled the 2010 calendar for the National School Games so that most of the competitions are completed in the first half of 2010. This was done to allow our student athletes more time to support and enjoy the YOG. MOE has also exempted athletes in the YOG training squads from inter-school competitions so that they can concentrate on the training for YOG.

In terms of school-based assessments or curriculum time, schools are better placed to make adjustments to allow students to participate in the various YOG programmes. This is because the involvement in YOG differs from school to school.

We are heartened by the dedication shown by students and schools in their support of the YOG. The YOG will leave a legacy of programmes and partnerships that will provide long-term benefits for our students. MOE and schools will continue to leverage on these programmes to enhance our students' learning.

.....108,000 kids along with 6800 teachers and staff are being compelled by MOE to serve for YOG. $390 million spent and what do they get in return? COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT PROGRAMME HOURS!....... .

Wow  108,000 kids with another 6800 teachers and staff. Volunteers and part-timer workers not included yet, say another 5,000..........I estimate total 120,000 people involved. Mind boogling man-hours thrown in.....to host (if I recalled correctly some number in the State's Times) about 5000 sportmen/women and officials ??

That will be 120,000/5000= 24 local and $390M and counting/5000 = $78,000 to support each visitor to host this kiddie game event ?

No wonder there are still people jumpoing high-rise buildings and MRT tracks.

Hope that oppositios will demand a detailed account of how the money was spent during the election rally since they are using tax-payers' money to organise the kiddie games.
