Miss Great Britain Tara Vaitiere Hoyos poses in her national costume - a Beefeater's uniform with wet-look leggings.
Because that's what we all wear in Great Britain, obviously.

usa_1698060i.jpg

Rima Fakih, Miss USA 2010, wears a costume inspired by the Seal of the President of the United States as a tribute to Barack Obama.
She apparently drew a basic design, and then Victoria's Secret Fashion Show designer Martin Izquierdo came up with the final creation.
We haven't heard what Mr Obama thinks of the tribute.

belgium_1698049i.jpg

Name a famous Belgian. Kim Clijsters, you say? So that's why Miss Belgium Cilou Annys is decked out in tennis paraphernalia.

france_1698021i.jpg

Think "France" and you think berets, the Tricolour and the Eiffel Tower. All Miss France Malika Menard is missing is a bicycle and a string of onions

australia_1698105i.jpg

The costume worn by Jesinta Campbell, Miss Australia 2010, was described as "a dingo's breakfast" by some, though the Telegraph's Fashion Director,
Hilary Alexander, quite liked it, saying: "the sheepskin shrug is bang on trend, the Ugg boots are as quintessentially Australian as Aussie Rules, and having the 'togs' hand-painted by an Aboriginal artist is a master-stroke"

japan_1698067i.jpg

Organisers originally claimed that the costume worn by Maiko Itai, Miss Japan 2010, was designed by John Galliano. But when a missosology.org forum member pointed out that the dress was ripped off from a Yumi Katsura 2008 collection, the claim was retracted

zambia_1698038i.jpg

Poor Miss Zambia 2010, Alice Musukwa. Not only does she have to carry a large calabash,
she also has two gourds for a bra, and phallic gourds on her dress

kazakhstan_1698101i.jpg

Asselina Kuchukova, Miss Kazakhstan 2010, seems to be courting favour by wearing all of the other countries' flags in her elaborate headdress

venezuela_1698054i.jpg

Miss Venezuela Marelisa Gibson wears a costume covered in glittering shards in tribute to a glass monument to revolutionary icon Ernesto "Che" Guevara that was shot up and destroyed less than two weeks after it was unveiled by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez's government

colombia_1698097i.jpg

Miss Colombia Natalia Navarro is dressed as India Catalina, an indigenous woman who acted as interpreter and intermediary for the Spanish invaders.
To many people in Colombia, she is an icon of the extermination of the Precolumbian inhabitants

bahamas_1698073i.jpg

The costume worn by Miss Bahamas Braneka Bassett is called The Flamingo. We assume that's the Las Vegas casino

curacao_1698026i.jpg

Miss Curacao Safira de Wit has sequined hibiscus flowers on her head, a dress that opens to reveal a harbour scene, and ruby slippers.
There's no place like home!

ukraine_1698011i.jpg

Miss Ukraine Anna Poslavska poses in a dress which appears to be covered in wheat, while her hairstyle seems to be a nod to
former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko

albania_1698106i.jpg

Miss Albania Angela Martini wears a costume inspired by the country's flag - and a trip to Ann Summers

italy_1698112i.jpg

Miss Italy Jessica Cecchini wears a Roman Gladiator costume. We give it a thumbs-down

switzerland_1698108i.jpg

Miss Switzerland Linda Faeh seems to be prepared for battle with her sword and shield. We thought they always remained neutral

ireland_1698084i.jpg

The designer of the costume worn by Miss Ireland Rozanna Purcell says it "incorporates Irish lace, Celtic Symbols, and the rich colours of Ireland".
We can't help thinking she looks more like a swords and sorcery fantasy illustration

kosovo_1698045i.jpg

Miss Kosovo Keshtjella Pepshi has a gold antelope head on her head and a sceptre. No, we don't know why

angola_1698040i.jpg

Miss Angola Jurema Ferraz clearly doesn't believe in the maxim "less is more"

honduras_1698069i.jpg

Kenia Martinez, Miss Honduras. Where the tigers come from, right?

guam_1698085i.jpg

Miss Guam Vanessa Torres seems to have had a long run through lush tropical foliage on her way to the pageant

ghana_1698032i.jpg

Awurama Simpson, Miss Ghana 2010, wears an adaptation of traditional West African women's wear

nicaragua_1698090i.jpg

Many of the Caribbean and Latin American countries have chosen flamboyant Carnival costumes.
Here's Miss Nicaragua Scharllette Allen Moses

panama_1698088i.jpg

Anyoli Abrego, Miss Panama 2010

dominican-republic_1698093i.jpg

Miss Dominican Republic Eva Arias

paraguay_1698110i.jpg

Miss Paraguay Johana Benitez Olmedo

british-virgin-isl_1698012i.jpg

Miss British Virgin Islands Josefina Nunez

us-virgin-island_1698098i.jpg

Miss U.S. Virgin Islands 2010 Janeisha John - neither from the U.S. nor an island

haiti_1698092i.jpg

Miss Haiti Sarodj Bertin

canada_1698140i.jpg

Cunningly, Elena Semikina, Miss Canada, distracts attention from the fur she seems to be wearing by flashing a bit of leg

Miss Australia FTW

australia_1698105i.jpg

The costume worn by Jesinta Campbell, Miss Australia 2010, was described as "a dingo's breakfast" by some, though the Telegraph's Fashion Director,
Hilary Alexander, quite liked it, saying: "the sheepskin shrug is bang on trend, the Ugg boots are as quintessentially Australian as Aussie Rules, and having the 'togs' hand-painted by an Aboriginal artist is a master-stroke"

I like Miss Zambia, with the two gourds....:D

Where is Miss Xing Jia Por???

jamaica_1699694i.jpg

Jamaica seems to be going all out to win the national costume competition at the Miss Universe pageant,
dressing Yendi Phillipps as a giant butterfly. We approve.

miss-mexico_1699482i.jpg

Jimena Navarrete, Miss Mexico, is giving her a run for her money with this fabulously over-the-top creation.

panama_1699671i.jpg

Full marks for effort, also, to Miss Panama Anyoli Abrego.

dominican_1699663i.jpg

Brandishing a silver whip, it's Eva Arias, Miss Dominatrix - sorry, Miss Dominican Republic

south-korea_1699689i.jpg

Miss Korea, Joori Kim, has a mean backhand serve

costa-rica_1699678i.jpg

Miss Costa Rica Marva Wright wears a peacock-inspired dress with plumes in her head.
We're not sure why, considering the peacock hails from Asia

malaysia_1699664i.jpg

The costume worn by Miss Malaysia Nadine Ann Thomas gives new meaning to the term "gold leaf".
It is apparently inspired by a Malay warrior princess

el-salvador_1699668i.jpg

The designers of the costume worn by Sonia Cruz, Miss El Salvador 2010, have basically just glued a load of beads onto a bra.
Must try harder

finland_1699696i.jpg

Miss Finland Viivi Pumpanen seems to be under the impression that this is the evening wear category.
And the poor thing has put her false eyelashes on upside down

croatia_1699699i.jpg

Lana Obad, Miss Croatia, seems to think this is the swimwear round.
A few strings of beads on a bikini does not a national costume make

new-zealand_1699688i.jpg

Ria van Dyke, Miss New Zealand, has stuck silver ferns on her head, on her ears, and on her hands.
Still, it beats dressing as a large kiwi, we suppose

miss-great-britain_1699483i.jpg

Miss Great Britain Tara Vaitiere Hoyos twirls her Beefeater costume to reveal that she's lost the wet-look leggings, thankfully

philippines_1699677i.jpg

Miss Philippines Venus Raj seems to wish she was representing Spain.
Perhaps the designers confused "Manila" with "mantilla"

mauritius_1699683i.jpg

Well, Hello Dolly, it's Dalysha Doorga, Miss Mauritius

egypt_1699661i.jpg

Miss Egypt Donia Hamed wears the symbol of the ancient Egyptian goddess Hathor on her head

poland_1699673i.jpg

Maria Nowakowska, Miss Poland 2010, has a dress that turns into the Polish flag

czech-republic_1699698i.jpg

Miss Czech Republic Jitka Valkova. She will make music wherever she goes

germany_1699651i.jpg

Kristiana Rohder, Miss Germany, wears a dirndl. And it's as dull as that sounds

norway_1699680i.jpg

Melinda Elvenes, Miss Norway, won't be forced to wear a silly costume. Far too tasteful

georgia_1699647i.jpg

It's curtains for Miss Georgia Nana Gogichaishvili

cyprus_1699682i.jpg

Another one who hasn't really bothered is Demetra Olymbiou, Miss Cyprus.
Where are the feathers? The beads? The silver whip and alien headdress?
