Holding its bikini rehearsals along with selection for “Miss Friendship” at the Hong Kong Coliseum, the first award in the Miss Hong Kong 2022 pageant has gone to contestant no. 13, Sharon Ying (刑慧敏)!
Sharon (right) has picked up the first award given out at this year’s contest.

The 29-year-old model happily said, “I really feel very surprised to win this award, turns out (it was because) I had gotten along well with everyone during this period of training. Because of the competition tomorrow, we had lots to prepare, plus we’re also having rehearsals tonight and might be ending rather late, so being able to receive this award has really (helped) put me at ease,”

The 1.75m-tall beauty added that she would be enjoying the competition process, regardless of the eventual results.

As the 50th edition of the Miss Hong Kong beauty pageant, this year’s finals will be held on September 25, 8pm local time, with 55-year-old actor and singer Leon Lai (黎明) gracing the event as performing guest. The contest was embroiled in controversy recently after a female member of Hong Kong’s police watchdog questioned the need for contestants to be dressed in “little clothing”, and to answer questions in an air-conditioned room while being stared. Organiser TVB swiftly responded with a statement stating its right to take legal action.

The Miss Hong Kong pageant went smoothly last night amid the swimsuit saga.
A member of the police watchdog, Helen Yu Lai Ching-ping, had criticized broadcaster TVB, which organizes the pageant, and linked it to violence, obscenity and child abuse.

But all 19 finalists wore a swimsuit and walked on the stage to answer a question from host Eric Tsang Chi-wai, who was at the center of the controversy.
"No matter how time changes, the swimsuit session won't change," said Tsang.
No 13 Sharon Ying Wai-man, meanwhile, won Miss Friendship.

This year's event was hosted by an unprecedented 14 cross-generational hosts, including Natalis Chan Pak-cheung.

Many business and political figures attended the final, including former chief executive Leung Chun-ying's wife, Regina Leung Tong Ching-yee, and Sasa's founder Kow Law Kwai-chun.

A former Miss Hong Kong champion, Monica Chan Fat-yung, singer Niki Chow Lai-ki and model Qi Qi also appeared.

All the 19 candidates also wore gowns designed by famous designer Viola Chan, classic previous Miss Hong Kong gowns and pilot uniforms.

As this year is the 50th Anniversary of Miss Hong Kong, the pageant recapped some questions and videos from previous years.

The Miss Hong Kong 2022 was held on September 26, 2022 and resulted in 27-years-old Denice Lam (林鈺洧) taking home the crown. Cecca Xu (許子萱) bagged three awards including first runner up award, Miss International Goodwill Award and Ecological Conservation Award. Joey Leung (梁超怡) won second-runner up and Miss Photogenic.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Hong Kong Pageantry, the contestant graced the stage and paid tribute to the past. While the pageants opened the event with a grand dance, many of the contestant performed with stiff movements and Astrid Xu (徐麟) was seen dancing like a robot.

During the self-introduction segment, Astrid, Gabrielle Wang (王子蝶), Cherry Chan (陳銘鳳), and Naomi Zhang (張可欣) struggled with their Cantonese pronunciation while Cecca and Chloe Cheung (張光怡) took the opportunity to highlight their academic background. Cecca revealed that she was admitted to Oxford and Cambridge but wanted to compete in the pageantry to get a unique experience.

During the show’s final segment with the top 5 contestants, Denice was asked what she would she say in her winning speech to her father and former actor Wilson Lam (林俊賢). Denice responded that she believed her father would be very surprised and revealed that her father did not approve her decision to compete in Miss Hong Kong 2022.

When Denice was announced as the winner, the beauty queen was in total disbelief and asked if the results were true. However, while Denice was sitting on the throne, Denice accidentally exposed herself.

The preliminary rounds for the Miss Hong Kong 2022 pageant kicked off recently and already a famous offspring is making waves in the beauty competition.
Actress Denice Lam, 27, who is the daughter '80s TVB heartthrob Wilson Lam (林俊贤) and his Pan-Asian stylist ex-wife, caught the media’s attention as soon as she arrived at the audition.

Known for her sultry looks, the 1.8m leggy beauty is said to be a strong contender for the crown.

This is Denice's last chance to take part in the beauty pageant
Denice, who got her start in showbiz as a model in 2016, shared that she decided to take part in the pageant after her friend encouraged her to do so.
As the cut-off age for the competition is 27, this is her last chance to join the pageant.
Her dad was very supportive of her decision. “He said ‘If you want to take part, just go for it!’” she told the media.

Denice is no stranger to Miss Hong Kong.

Before she entered showbiz, she tried her luck at the pageant but was eliminated in the early rounds.
Under the recommendation of a friend, she started modelling under hotshot manager Kim Chou, who also managed stars like Lynn Xiong and Angelababy.
Denice has since turned her focus to acting and has appeared in a few ViuTV shows.

Denice and Wilson
Denice is said to have inherited her dad’s good looks and height.
Once dubbed “one of Hongkong's most handsome men”, Wilson, 61, was one of the TVB's biggest stars in the ‘80s.

He retired from acting in 1996 to focus on his business.
Wilson split with his wife shortly after Denice was born and she went to live with her mum.
Father and daughter lost contact for many years and only reunited a decade ago with the help of relatives.

Wilson back in the day
Last year, Wilson found himself in the spotlight after a video of him looking almost unrecognisable made the rounds online.
While netizens were surprised at how much he's aged, he has not lost his swagger.
