Did he consider lowering other costs (especially, rental) to buffer the salary hike?
Minister Tan: We live in 1st world economy but getting 3rd world wages
Acting Minister of Manpower Tan Chuan-Jin
At a grassroots event in Geylang Serai yesterday (10 Mar), Acting Minister of Manpower Tan Chuan-Jin acknowledged that though Singaporeans live in a First World economy, in certain sectors, Singaporeans are only getting Third World wages.
He cautioned that as wages go up, the impact of restructuring will be felt by individuals as well as companies.
So as the wages of low-income Singaporeans working in jobs like cleaning increase, he said people should “expect that there would be an impact on cost”.
He added, “But that’s something we need to understand that it’s the correct thing to do, to help raise wages, and I guess it’s something that we have to learn to adjust to.”
On service levels, he cited examples in Japan where many food outlets use automation and are self-service.
He said consumers can expect a level of service that is “not necessarily poor, but different”, and will have to pay a premium if they still want to be waited.
Meanwhile, ESM Goh Chok Tong announced on Facebook yesterday (10 Mar) he told grassroots leaders and MPs of Marine Parade GRC on Sat (9 Mar) that Minister Tan Chuan-Jin had taken over from him as anchor Minister of the GRC.
Mr Goh also said that as part of his participation in “active aging”, he is preparing for a working trip to Tokyo tomorrow (12 Mar) on MAS business and meetings with Japanese leaders.
Marine Parade GRC MP Seah Kian Peng, who is also the CEO of NTUC Fairprice, said he had been expecting the change for some time as Mr Tan is the only minister in the GRC after Mr Goh stepped down from the Cabinet in 2011.
The other MPs in Marine Parade GRC are Associate Professor Fatimah Lateef and Ms Tin Pei Ling.
