SINGAPORE - Officers from the Ministry for Foreign Affairs (MFA) will go beyond the call of duty to help Singaporeans when they encounter difficulties abroad, but there are limits to what they can do, Minister for Foreign Affairs K Shanmugam said on Thursday when he disclosed some of the more unusual requests that consular officers had to deal with.

One Singaporean asked for help to get refunds for unsatisfactory, illegal sexual services sought abroad while another asked for the launching of an investigation into a case of alleged racism after being served a smaller piece of chicken than the locals at a fast food chain overseas.

Another unusual request from a Singaporean man was for officers to convince his foreign girlfriend to quicken her divorce proceedings so he could marry her.

These were just three of five examples cited by Mr Shanmugam, who is also law minister, in his Facebook post on Thursday afternoon.

Aiyah, to use the PAP-style arguments, the silent majority got no problems lah. To quote a few examples out of the millions who travel overseas, is a little bit naughty, to say the least. Highly paid ministers should not go round wasting time posting such trivials. I would rather they make substantive comments about the law suit and RN getting the money, etc.

Yeah, I remember this incident. As I recall, this famous Sinkie wife got stroke. He went to the singapore consulate in London and complain like shit about the hospital service. The consulate immediately outfitted a Jumbo Jet with flying hospital and send it to London to pick the wife up. This kind of unreasonable request the singapore consulate can fulfill, why not help a sinkie get a refund on a bad hooker?

There was another case where a unreasonable Singapore travelled to London with his elderly 82 year and not so healthy wife without taking full travel insurance with emergency repatriation.

Just after midnight he realised that he wife was seriously ill and called the ambulance at 12.20am. He complained that the ambulance took too long when it reached him 40 minutes later. At the hospital he realised that the hospital CT scan would only be available at 8am. At 2am, he actually woke up the Singapore Ambassador who then called No.10 Downing for help. The CT scan was done at 3.30am

The Amazing thing is that none of the British Officials complained. Their foreign minister neither did their Health Minister complained or wrote in their Facebook about this unreasonable Singaporean who was not even their citizen let alone paid taxes in the UK.

Shanmugam is right, the audacity of some Singaporeans.

Hello Ministar, forget about helping these idiots. How about spending your time and resources to help Singaporeans get plum jobs overseas, get them in nos where they can be a majority in that area so that they can transform that area to be like a mini Singapore so that they can feel rite at home. Maybe organize a Singapore Day at their major mall for them to get together. The world is our oyster, rite!! Let's make the world a border less place!
