During the announcement of the East Coast GRC line up, Manpower Minister Lim Swee Say said that the ruling party PAP has to take in more foreigners to protect Singaporeans’ jobs and because of that, there were fewer retrenchments and wages went up:
“The Government came to the conclusion that one good way to protect the Singaporean workers from (global economic volatility) was to expand the size of the work force, to go for higher growth. The foreign manpower provided some buffer to the local workforce from the fluctuation of the economy.
That strategy worked for 10 years…during which global unemployment went up and stayed high, while many industrialised nations suffered wage stagnation.
But because of our higher growth policy and more liberal intake of foreign manpower, we were able to stay away from unemployment and wage stagnation. The gain for the Singapore workforce: There were fewer retrenchments. Also, wages went up, not just in nominal but real terms.”
Minister Lim Swee Say has been hard-selling his population policies and justifying the government’s white paper proposal to raise the population to 6.9 million. The East Coast GRC anchor minister also bid farewell to former Transport Minister Raymond Lim and even wept at the press conference.That strategy worked for 10 years…during which global unemployment went up and stayed high, while many industrialised nations suffered wage stagnation.

Which deserving government will sign CECA an agreement with India which allows Indian nationals visa free Long Term working pass for 1 year. Chua GabrielWhat Singapore need is to have more cheap foreign labor so that businesses can still continue to make extra profits by not having to spend too much paying their workers. Singaporeans are too lazy and demanding, and have a sense of entitlement. Hence the government should loosen its immigration regulation to allow FTs into all sectors, even areas that Singaporeans are heavily competing in, but asking for high Singaporean wages.
Losers who have no money likes to complain a lot about long health care waiting time, transport and food prices and all that self-entitled nonsense. Singapore is a meritocratic country. If you have no ability to earn money to pay for private health care and insurance, or buy your own home, then stop being lazy and work harder. Don't blame the government but yourself.

Think they got a diploma or a degree cannot become security, cleaner or retail worker, and complain they lose their job to FTs who don't require as much salary. Only complain, but look at African countries, or the middle east where people are starving and facing war. Only lazy people or gamblers and alcoholics and drug addicts and people who have children even though they have no money to afford are poor due to their poor lifestyle choice complain so much. They will be more grateful to our government and LKY than our loser SIngaporeans even if they work in cleaning jobs.
Rich people have a lot more to lose if Singapore economy goes down. And the government has a duty to look after the interests of wealthy people more, just like stock holders of a company. Otherwise international confidence of Singapore will drop and we will lose money.

Adaline WongChua Gabriel Intelligent and targetted immigration of the people with the right skills that is in-demand (and not in direct compitition with the local population) is the way to go. FTs are important yes, but they should not be competing with locals on jobs that are already in high demand. The government should make sure that FTs can only work in areas where there's a shortage of local talent, and employers have to pay them the same rate as they pay locals + on top of levies (and FTs have to pay tax since they are taking advantage of our infrastructure and economy and they don't have to contribute to Singapore's defense by doing NS/reservice); as it shouldn't be attractive to hire FTs because of lower wage and not having to go for reservice.
