Thank goodness for that. The minimum wage in NZ has stunted the growth of the country for a long time and has pretty much destroyed the manufacturing sector.

Having minimum wage will not solve the problem you've mention. What needed is policy change in regards to business cost and cost of starting new business. The main killer for this is rental, property price and transportation cost. The biggest owner of these 3 factors are the gov as in GLC and GIC.

With business cost down, anyone who is unemployed can find his/her own passion to start a business. Be it food, service or production of products.

In 1979, 68% agreed with the statement "minimum wage will increase unemployment among young and unskilled workers". By 2003, only 45.6%, a minority agreed. In 2014, it would be considerably lower.
