Tour helicopter takes deadly crash into East River

A tourist helicopter plunged into the East River on Sunday night, killing all five passengers and leaving three clinging to life after they were trapped inside the sinking vessel while the pilot scrambled to safety, police sources said.

The Eurocopter AS350 went down around 88th Street, near Gracie Mansion, at about 7:15 p.m., sources said.

The pilot was able to get out and climb aboard a raft — but five others remained trapped inside the upside-down helicopter because they were strapped into their seats, FDNY commissioner Daniel Nigro said during a Sunday night press conference.

“There was about a minute where we didn’t see anyone come out,” witness Brianna Jesme, 22, told The Post. “Then after a minute, we saw a man come out holding onto a raft screaming: ‘Help! help! Ah!’ and then inaudible screams.

“It was horrifying.”

Two people were pronounced dead on the scene — three others were hospitalized in critical condition. They later died at Bellevue, officials said.

Witness Mary Lee, 66, told The Post that she saw the chopper go down from her apartment window and said she “immediately thought someone was in there and not going to live — it’s cold water, it was sinking really fast.

“By the time we got out here, we couldn’t see it. It was under water.”

Video posted to Twitter showed a red chopper splash down in the river and then quickly go belly-up as its rotors violently hacked at the water.

“Mayday . . . Mayday . . . Mayday . . . East River engine failure,” the pilot said over his radio during the distress call.

Within minutes, the helicopter disappeared beneath the waves, witness John Magers, 24, told The Post.

“It looked like it was completely submerged,” he said. “It couldn’t have been any longer than 5 minutes.”

The NYPD deployed two divers, and the pilot was taken to Bellevue Hospital, sources said.

Police sources said the chopper was operated by New Jersey-based Fly Liberty Charter and took off from Wall Street.

Fly Liberty could not immediately be reached for comment.

The FAA said it is investigating.

Five people have been killed after a passenger helicopter crashed in New York City, officials have confirmed.
A total of six people were on board the helicopter, including the pilot, New York Police Department Commissioner James O’Neill told a press briefing at the East 34th Street Heliport. He said the aircraft was owned by Liberty Helicopter Tours and was on a private charter for a photo shoot.

“The pilot freed himself, the other five did not,” Fire Department of New York Commissioner Daniel Nigro said. “Police and fire department divers entered the water and removed the other five."

Two of them were pronounced dead at the scene and the remaining three were rushed to a hospital in a critical condition but later died.

“The pilot is OK, taken to the hospital and checked out,” Nigro added, but said authorities so far “don’t have an outcome” on the other victims. He said it took divers a while to free them, working in 15 meters (50 feet ) of water with a 6.4 kmph (4mph) current and a water temperature of below 4.5 degrees Celsius (40 degrees Fahrenheit).

Emergency divers were seen in the water around the partially-submerged and inverted wreck of the Eurocopter AS350. The Fire Department crews were also present at the site, near 91st Street in Manhattan.

An amateur video of the crash has emerged, showing a red helicopter coming down with a large splash at dusk, before capsizing onto its right side. It was captured by an alleged eyewitness, who posted it in his Twitter acount, ‘JJ Magers’.

Roosevelt Island resident Xinran Jiang said she and her husband also saw the red helicopter descending rapidly at about 7:08 pm, the New York Times reports. “It almost looked like it was landing,” Jiang said. “It wasn’t moving fast. We were curious where it was going to land. Then the next minute, it was diving into the river.”

Arpi Gettings said she was finishing dinner with friends in her apartment on East 92nd Street in Manhattan when they witnessed the crash. “It caught our attention because it was going really fast toward the river,” she said. “Then it went more steady and it crashed into the river.” Gettings said she saw what she took to be an orange life raft near the crashed chopper, but not whether anyone made it out or to the life raft.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the aircraft went down off the northern end of Roosevelt Island, between Manhattan and Long Island, around 7:00pm. The agency said it was investigating the accident.

NTSB to investigate Manhattan helicopter crash
Helicopter crash in Manhattan's East River kills all 5 passengers. Pilot is the lone survivor.

A chilling Instagram video taken by one of the victims of the East River helicopter crash captures the final moments before the chopper plunged into the New York City waterway, killing five of the six people aboard.

Fox News has identified the victims as Trevor Cadigan, 26, of Dallas, Carla Vallejos-Blanco, a 29-year old visiting the city from Argentina, Brian McDaniel, a 26-year-old Dallas firefighter, Daniel Thompson, a 34-year-old from New York City, and 29-year-old Tristian Hill.

The video was taken by Cadigan, a video journalist, according to his brother-in-law Travis Howard, who spoke to the Washington Post.

One of the men in the video is seen flashing a thumbs up as the helicopter took off amidst the sunset Sunday.

The video surfaced as investigators Monday were looking into whether one of the passenger’s bags may have accidentally hit the fuel shutoff button of the doomed helicopter.

“Mayday, mayday, mayday,” Richard Vance, the 33-year-old Liberty Helicopters pilot, called out over his radio seconds before going down in the crash. “East River engine failure!”

The group of five passengers were on the private Eurocopter AS350 for a photo shoot when it crashed.

The cause of the crash is not yet known, but National Transportation Safety Board investigators are expected to provide an update at 4:30 p.m. local time.


Sunday's crash is reportedly the third in the past 11 years involving Liberty Helicopters, a company based in Kearny, N.J.

"It took a while for the divers to get these people out. They worked very quickly as fast as they could," Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said. "It was a great tragedy that we had here."

The passengers were recovered shortly after the helicopter went into the water around 7:06 p.m. Police and fire department divers had to remove them from tight harnesses while they were upside down, Nigro added.

Three of the passengers were listed in critical condition after being rushed to nearby hospitals, where they later died. Two were declared dead at the scene and police said the pilot freed himself and was rescued by a passing tugboat.

Officials said the water Sunday night was frigid, with temperatures around 40 degrees.

Video posted on Twitter of the crash showed a red helicopter land hard in the river and then flip on its side as its rotors beat the water.

Police sources told the New York Post the helicopter was being flown by Vance, a native of Danbury, Conn.

“He’s a very good pilot,” his father, Anthony Vance, told the newspaper, adding Richard has flown “a lot of years” with a commercial pilot’s license.

A LinkedIn page purportedly belonging to Vance said he has been employed by Liberty Helicopters since April 2016.

"We are focused on supporting the families affected by this tragic accident and fully cooperating with the FAA and NTSB investigations," Liberty Helicopters told Fox News in a statement.

The company says on its website it has been in business since 1990 and offers “unparalleled safety records and a commitment to customer service.”

But Sunday’s crash is the third one involving Liberty Helicopters in the past 11 years, according to reports.

In 2009, a sightseeing helicopter of the same model and operated by Liberty Helicopters collided with a small, private plane over the Hudson River, killing nine people, including a group of Italian tourists, the Associated Press reported.

Two years earlier, one of the company’s helicopters, carrying eight people, dropped into the Hudson River but everyone was able to escape, according to WABC.

One witness told the New York Post she watched Sunday’s crash unfold from her apartment window and "immediately thought someone was in there and not going to live."

“By the time we got out here, we couldn’t see [the helicopter]," Mary Lee said. "It was under water.”

The skies over New York constantly buzz with helicopters carrying tourists, businesspeople, traffic reporters, medical teams and others. Crashes are not unheard of.

A crash in October 2011 in the East River killed a British woman visiting the city for her 40th birthday. Three other passengers were injured.

In June 2005, two helicopters crashed into the East River in the same week. One incident injured eight people, including some banking executives. The other crash hit the water shortly after takeoff on a sightseeing flight, injuring six tourists and the pilot.
