[TD="class: msgtxt"][h=2]MINDEF: Disruptions granted to NSFs to obtain medical degrees to serve as MOs in SAF[/h]August 5th, 2011 | Author: Temasek Review | Edit
Following the public outcry over MINDEF’s opaque NS deferment criteria which seems to favor the sons of PAP ministers, MINDEF has issued a press statement claiming that disruption for medical course is applied ‘uniformly’.
In a letter published in the Straits Times Forum today, MINDEF’s Director of Public Affairs Desmond Tan wrote that MINDEF “grants disruption for full-time national servicemen (NSFs) to obtain their medical degrees, as the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) has operational needs for doctors.”
“Longer periods were granted for those admitted to universities in the United States, where medicine is a graduate course. Medical students there are required to complete a pre-medical component for a general undergraduate degree before being accepted for the Doctor of Medicine course proper.”
However, MINDEF failed to explain why Dr Patrick Tan, the son of PAP-endorsed presidential hopeful Tony Tan went to Stanford University to pursue Medicine did not complete his MOCC upon his return to serve his National Service.
As such, Dr Patrick Tan did not serve as a SAF medical officer (MO) to fulfill SAF’s operational needs when he returned from his overseas studies after a lengthy 13 year disruption.
The question is: why was Dr Patrick Tan allowed to be disrupted by MINDEF in the first place when he would not be serving SAF as a medical officer like others who were disrupted to study medicine?
MINDEF also did not reveal the number of NSFs who have served or are serving in the unique vocation of ‘defence medical scientist’ which according to our sources, does not exist in SAF at all.
Was the vocation specially created for Dr Patrick Tan to serve his NS in an air-conditioned laboratory at the Defence Science Organizations while other combat-fit NSFs are forced to sweat it out in the open field?
Also, sources close to Dr Patrick Tan had informed Temasek Review Emeritus (TRE) that he was an “Admin Supervisor” during his NS days and Ord in 2002, then RODed in 2009. With less than 10 years in between ORDed and RODed, Dr Patrick Tan claims to have completed all ICTS?
MINDEF should stop obfuscating the issue and come clean with Singaporeans: Did Dr Patrick Tan receive extraordinary treatment because he is the son of the Defence Minister?
