Navy serviceman Jason Chee will be given a desk job as an operations supervisor when he recovers from last December's horrific ship accident in which he lost both legs and his left arm.

The 30-year-old, who holds the Military Expert 2 rank in the Republic of Singapore Navy, said yesterday he is looking forward to taking up the role the navy has "secured" for him at its headquarters. "I want to go back to my job because I love the navy," he said. "If I quit the navy, what will happen to me?"

While the administrative job will be markedly different from his previous vocation as a weapons systems supervisor, ME2 Chee said he will get used to it. For now, the injured serviceman, who still has two fingers on his right hand, is focused on his recovery and rehabilitation process.

This includes pool-based physiotherapy, twice-weekly table-tennis sessions and twice-daily therapy sessions to strengthen his body and teach him to walk with prosthetic legs. ME2 Chee also said he will head to the United States next year to get his prosthetic limbs fitted.

The serviceman was speaking to reporters yesterday after meeting Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen and motivational speaker Nick Vujicic, who was born without limbs.

They met at an event in which Mr Vujicic was speaking at Star Theatre @ The Star Performing Arts Centre.

Dr Ng said he was heartened by the swift recovery of ME2 Chee and others left in similar positions who have "started from within". "I think that is resilience and I think that is something that we all can learn," said Dr Ng.

He said Singapore Armed Forces doctors will monitor and support ME2 Chee's rehabilitation and they are in touch with doctors who specialise in helping multiple amputees.

ME2 Chee was discharged from hospital in June and began travelling by motorised wheelchair in July when he also learnt to walk a few steps on prosthetic legs. His full rehabilitation, which aims for him to eventually walk unaided, is expected to take years.

ME2 Chee said his strong willpower has kept him going and he draws inspiration from several disabled people, including Mr Vujicic.

"I told myself not to give up," he added. "I motivate myself to do more things that I want to do. If I think negative and want to give up, what will happen next?"

For a small monthly stipend...MINDEF gets a mascot for the disabled....what a cheap marketing stunt.

Looking at the amount of effort put into his rehabilitation i am fairly sure he has already been compensated and is receiving plenty of continuous support from SAF doctors and insurances. Giving him a job, aka purpose in life, is the least they can do.

When I had an accident & had to depend on a wheel chair for a few months I found it very difficult. At least I had 2 hands to help me move about.

This guy has only 1 hand. It's going to be very tough for him to function. For example how is going to dress himself, cook, go to the loo,.. Even if he manages to do all that, how is he going to get to work:confused:

what compensation job or no job. to get anything decent, will have to go to court, and the big guys know the small guy wont be able to afford it..

I can hardly imagine one can sue SAF n win...imagine possibility we win World Cup 2018

From my pov. If i were in his situation. Its better to b dead. I believe the article has been heavily processed by pap. It says he is happy etc etc. I find it damn hard to believe. There is alot off things he cant do n his quality of life is crap. Even he become a cyborg like robocop. Is he fully whole? That y better hurry up n sign AMD. A life that is hard is a life not worth living.

Maybe MINDEF will provide him with an adjutant, driver, staff car, personal assistant, maid, nurse, and electric wheelchair.
I am quite sure that we will see many more pics of this guy going into the next GE. :o

Spot on, by making him into a hero, everyone forgot how this ME2 Chee got into this state in the first place.

Anyway what the fuck is a Military Expert in the first place??

Will not be surprised if he is at next August's NDR where the PM will get another chance to shed tears.
As with the blind researcher, the theme again would be how an inspirational person overcame massive obstacles.

cocked up rank Military Expert 2. Who wants to marry a ME?

hmm, what is military expert?
expert in what?
we only see War in movies,
so what really is a military expert?
no other army in this world got such a title.
even USA Defence Secretary dont call himself a military expert!!!!!

Maybe LKY can spare one of his retainers I'm sure he has many:rolleyes: Soon many of them will be out of a job when he ups the lorry.

In Canada this guy would probably go to a group home & have some kind of existence but in Spore this guy has no future. He'll probably just end up another bedok reservoir statistic & be forgotten by the PAP.

Our MINDeaf is so kind? Think again.

I guess this Jason Chee case is likely to be a "big screw up mistakes" made by the higher rankings on-board the ship during the operation.
It is not a mistakes made by himself but he ended up being the victim of someone's incompetence in command and control.

One of my friend is also regular navy chap, he met with a car accident while riding a bike during office hours (for official duties).
He is a very cautious rider and it was the car that ramped into him. He recovered with his right arm and leg being paralyzed.

MINDeaf charged him for careless riding (even though it was not his mistakes).
He was not given another job by MINDeaf and was "early released" from his service with no compensation.

Gosh, you are really a sucker. He has lost all his limbs. If he were to be laid off from MINDEF after they have no use for him (how much work can he do when they have to make exceptional accommodation for him), he won't be able to land another job. On this basis, he is entitled to millions, not just a miserable job.

Your friend should have sued MINDEF. Put the onus of proof on MINDEF.

I won't rule out a win as judges know that the PAP's hold is tenuous at best. So, they might be more willing to be objective.

We need charitable lawyers to step up and help him. Make his case a precedent so that future victims of government screw-ups can be compensated adequately plus punitive payments.

That's what i said you twit. How and why are we to know how much he gets exactly in monetary terms? Important is that he is taken care of and can live a relatively independent life.
