August 5, 2011 at 1:41 pm MINDEF clarification misleading(Quote)
MINDEF’s clarification is misleading. It implies that being accepted to medical school (a graduate programme) is easy (almost certain) after completion of an undergraduate degree. This is certainly not the case, specially for the top US medical school like Stanford Med School. Competition to get into the top US med school is extremely fierce even for Americans. These schools take in only 1 (or at most 2) foreign students each year.
Can Patrick Tan show documentation that he was accepted by Stanford Med School before he even finished his undergraduate degree at Harvard? Patrick, ball is in your court.
Did MINDEF allowed him to deferment his NS (to study medicine) even though he has not been accepted by any US med school? MINDEF should clarify this issue.
It appears that MINDEF has been co-opted to try to clear TT’s name. Unfortunately for TT, MINDEF played fast and loose with the facts and made the situation worse. This also shows TT is the PAP candidate for President. He is not an independent candidate.

the issue is very simple. the SAF clarification is plain wrong and false for this very simple reason.
- when Patrick Tan supposedly disrupted for Medical Studies (1992), he was admitted to Harvard ONLY for undergraduate studies.
- There is absolutely NO WAY he, nor ANY ONE in the world could have known then, that he would qualify for Stanford Medical School in 4 years time. In other words, he DID NOT disrupt for medical studies.
- And even if one accepts this blatant lie, that he was allowed to disrupt for medical school, this does not gel with the fact that he was not awarded the President’s Scholarship for medical school. He was awarded to do liberal arts!
- As far as I understand, Presidents Scholarship awardees, should they desire to do medicine, are only allowed to pursue their studies in Singapore.

I’ve never seen anyone getting disruption for both the undergrad and graduate program even if they are studying medicine in the US. This is another new rule that MINDEF made up.
This scenario is resembling more and more like in ‘the animal farm’ where the pigs invent arbitrary rules just to suit their purposes.

MINDEF belongs to the PAP. They will try to say something and at the same time say nothing! Typical machinary of the PAP! MINDEF “created” the post for Dr Tony Tan’s son Patrick, and also for his eldest son . Based on a report I read, his eldest son served his NS as the PA to the commander of 3 SIR. From my knowledge, Commander’s PA is always a senior NCO, a staff sergeant or even a warrant officer with a clerical vocation. This person is a regular in the SAF. If it is true that his eldest was a PA to the commander then it was specially created, as NS man clerical vocation soldiers cannot be appointed PA to the Commander. If this is so, Dr Tan, you are fantastic, maybe we should let you be President because you are really fantastic!
