Microsoft says "Fuck you" if you dont have the latest CPU for Windows 11.

Linux is more robust since it adopts the Unix model, where there is separation between user and system. Just make sure your day-to-day account doesn't have admin privilege. In Windows, this is harder to do since some apps demand high privilege levels.

Hardware compatibility is vastly better than when we switched. As long as you don't buy bleeding-edge hardware, you will be OK. There aren't too many reasons to have this kind of hardware in the office. For gaming, you still need to go with Windows.

Unix and all its derivatives like Linux, is still the leading enterprise OS. It's also dominant in the embedded space due to the lack of licensing fees.

If you want to get serious work done and don't want Microsoft, a Mac is the way to go. That's the truth.

I used my macbook pro for youtube and netflix only. If you want to do serious work like a gainfully employed person, u use a ThinkPad.

Spoken like a truly ignorant person you are.
Haha... coming from a talk cock king like u, it is just noise.

Anyway what does someone like u know about computers. U don't google u know meh? haha. Why don't u google something and paste here to 'impress us'?

in sillycon valley, sales and marketing can get away with laptops running windows for their powerpoint presentations, but engineers and programmers use macbooks for all serious tech work, including google engineers working on chrome os coding and android apps. you’ll be in shock when you visit the google campus in mountain view. every google tech employee carries a macbook. even more shocking when you visit facebook campuses. non-techies also carry macbooks in menlo park and east palo alto. if you don’t carry a macbook, fb employees think you’re a dinosaur working for a granny company that is long dead and buried. and the most shocking of all - the microsoft campus in the valley is filled with ah nehs carrying their macbooks. basically, if you don’t carry a macbook pro, you’re not in a tech job in the valley.

Switched to Linux Mint from Ubuntu after the latter started screwing around with the desktop years ago. Standard install has LibreOffice and Thunderbird, PDF readers, etc. LibreOffice seems to be fine with standard MS Office documents.

The accounting and other systems use responsive web interfaces (HTML5, Javascript), so no more clients to install or update.

So for the average user, Linux Mint is a completely viable solution. When we first switched, people were bitching and moaning. But after a week, nobody complained. Puzzled, I asked them why they weren't complaining anymore. They said that it was because it was the same as before (Windows/Office combo).

Easy to install, easy to manage remotely, hard to pick up malware, etc. We made the switch 15 years ago, never looked back.

Thank you for the detailed info and feedback on user experience. Installing Linux is definitely on our cards, because we really need to wean ourselves off microsoft. Got out of mac a long time ago because of its proprietary and expensive hardware and software.

We are not early adopters of new tech (both hardware and software), so I think we will be ok.

Free open source is the way to go. We've been on Thunderbird for many years, everyone loves it.

We use a mixture of Macs, Windows, and Linux Mint. The Macs last about 8 years before they stop being supported. The Linux machines never die, some have been running 15 years with just updates or reinstallations to change distros. The Windows machines are needed only because of the CAD/CAM apps.

The easiest machines to maintain are the Linux ones, followed by the Macs. Windows machines are just a mess to deal with even though they are all on Windows 10.

Anyone using Linux on their desktop? Free, powerful and not prone to viruses. Linux Mint looks to be a viable alternative to Windows.

This one we wait for @CharKuayTeow to enlighten us further. He already said Linux Mint is well suited for desktops and a viable windows alternative.

For Linux, you have to choose the desktop environment during installation: different icons, layout, fonts etc.

The only potential problem I see is if you already have a lot of stuff on Windows NTFS-partitioned drives, you want to use Linux but still have access to them.

Either a 100% Linux environment or a two OS setup (Windows and Linux) partitioned or different hard drives. For us, we just need office productivity tools. Emails and browsers, I don't see any issues either.

Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu, but with different desktop manager. Why I switched our users to Mint after using Ubuntu for years, is that there was a period when Ubuntu was trying to push a merged tablet and desktop user interface. It was very confusing for users, and things were changing from release to release.

So for me, I think Linux Mint is a bit more stable, and more familiar to Windows users.

Can use for home, can listen to Spotify. Don’t know about your online broker. If they are using JavaScript, should be ok. You can download and run a live copy of either Ubuntu or Mint to try before installing. Won’t ever cost money.

Linux can read/write NTFS drives ok, but I dont know how well it would run off an NTFS partitioned drive. It’s not so common to want to do this, and I’ve not done this either.

many thanks bro.......i read somewhere that Linux Lite is better than Mint if the PC is low performance.......which one easier to use ?

I am addicted to gaming and prawns. Until Mac can have a separate line for gaming i am w windows.

I’ve not tried Linux Lite, but have used Xfce before. It is indeed quite easy on resources. We use Mint on very old PCs without any problem, so because the default install already has everything need to do work in an office, we’ve stuck to this. The biggest thing you can do to rejuvenate an old PC is use an SSD. It’s like getting a new machine! All our ancient PCs have SSDs now. Unless you’re running a porn server or storing lots of videos, even the cheapest, smallest SSDs of 40 Gb are good enough.

so what's the best way to put my SSD into new pc and then go to Windows10 64-bit ?.......or i better off go to LinusMint ?

how to upgrade my SSD's OS (Win10 or LinusMint) without losing the data inside SSD ?
