Missing e-mail, folder bug in Hotmail fixed

A bug that made e-mails and folders go missing for some Windows Live Hotmail users has been fixed according to Microsoft.
"We have identified the source of the issue (and) have restored e=mail access to those who were affected," the company said on the Windows Live Solution Center help site yesterday afternoon. "We recognize that even though we restored e-mail access, some of the affected users did not receive mail sent to them during the last 24 to 72 hours."
Microsoft says the issue was fixed early this morning, although if users are still having issues, they should send in a help request using a specialized form.

hotmail missing email Recently, several thousand users began reporting a problem with their Hotmail inboxes. Messages -- and sometimes entire folders -- had vanished from their Inboxes. Microsoft managed to restore everything in five days, but what exactly went wrong? And what -- if anything -- were they doing to make sure something like this didn't happen again?
The Hotmail team has since posted an explanation. As part of their regular monitoring and maintenance, Hotmail runs certain automated test scripts -- one of which got a bit carried away. Normally the script manipulates a set of test accounts created by the Hotmail team. This time, however, it accidentally messed with the directory information of up to 17,000 users.
The blog post points out that no email messages or folders were ever actually deleted -- Hotmail simply couldn't associate those users with their inboxes. The problem was protracted because Hotmail's support ticketing system didn't place a high priority on initial reports since there were so few, and because this wasn't a previously-known problem.
To make sure this situation doesn't occur again, Microsoft has tweaked its scripts and the ticketing system. Now, when multiple users report data loss, their tickets will automatically be tagged as high priority and demand immediate attention. Microsoft has also pledged to update its feedback system in order to improve communication with users.

【明報專訊】新年伊始，很多人都會開啟電郵帳戶收看親友的新年祝福，但全球最大電郵服務之一的微軟 Hotmail，卻有不少用戶在除夕、元旦打開收信匣時，赫然發現裏面空空如也，所有電郵被刪除。有憤怒的用戶怒斥Hotmail團隊「犯罪」，微軟承認Hotmail出現問題，向受影響客戶致歉，但拒透露事件是系統出錯還是黑客入侵導致。
本報記者昨登入Windows Live的Hotmail中文討論區，發現多人投訴除夕起所有電郵被無故刪除，連帶所有資料夾也被清空，部分人信箱裏只有一個由Hotmail發出的迎新電郵。用戶bugu除夕向微軟的投訴是典型例子：「如同很多人發問的一樣，昨天看信件中都有信件，但到了今天，信件連同資料夾全部被清空。看來這不是個別個案，很多人都發生這樣的問題。」
問題帳戶離奇重新註冊
微軟支援技術員對此回應道：「我們檢視了您的帳號發現在2010.12.30重新註冊，並且激活使用，郵箱一旦激活後，系統裏的備份郵件就會消失，很抱歉，我們無法為您恢復之前的郵件。」無獨有偶，技術員對多項投訴的回應，均指問題帳戶曾在去年12月30日激活。暫時未知為何多個帳戶當天集體出現問題。
微軟技術員還解釋稱，有部分用戶因270天內沒有登入帳戶，令Hotmail被置於「不活動狀態」，此時系統會刪除該帳戶的所有電郵，且無法復原。但用戶tosca2010於元旦反駁：「我幾乎每天都登入信箱，上周也有去收信，並非您所說的，此帳號長時間保持非活動狀態而造成信件遺失。」
有憤怒的外國用戶更有社交網站facebook設「12月30日起Hotmail電郵不見了」群組宣示不滿，斥這是Hotmail團隊的犯罪行為。

微軟討論區紀錄顯示，有關電郵消失的投訴最早始自11月，中文討論區以「丟失或者刪除郵件」主題的投訴自累積15頁，美國 微軟討論區相關投訴更達約500頁，用戶Zacgore周末憂心忡忡留言：「請幫我把電郵找回來。孩子寄給我的信，還有照片都在裏面！」
據市場調查公司comScore統計，Hotmail是全球最多人使用的電郵服務，用戶達3.6億。暫未知有多少用戶受影響。生產力促進局資訊科技業發展部首席顧問古煒德向本報稱，暫未聽過有關投訴，未能判斷到底是Hotmail系統問題，還是個別用戶太久沒有登入，以至電郵被刪除。
用戶投訴大多未獲回應
微軟發言人布魯克（Catherine Brooker）發表聲明稱：「目前似乎受影響範圍有限，微軟正與受影響用戶合作。做成客戶不便，我們深表歉意。」微軟呼籲用戶發現Hotmail帳戶有問題時，可登入WindowsLiveHelp.com求助，但很多用戶批評大部分投訴未獲回應。
