MFA issues fresh warning after members of public fall for phone-call scam

Published on May 11, 2015 1:12 PM

SINGAPORE - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has issued a fresh warning about scammers impersonating MFA officers, after some people fell victim to it.

The ministry also reminded the public that there is no MFA officer by the name of "Alex Chang". MFA and other government agencies do not call members of the public to request for money transfers or credit card details, it said in a press release on Monday.

The ministry made a police report about the scam on April 22 after it learnt that a certain "Alex Chang", impersonating as an MFA officer, was calling members of the public to verify their personal particulars and requesting monetary payment to resolve issues related to their immigration white card.

"Unfortunately, the scam calls have not stopped and there have been a few cases where members of the public have fallen victim," said MFA.

Those who received such calls should inform the police at 1800-255 0000 or submit a report online.
