A 39-year-old man in Singapore was sentenced to three weeks’ jail, fined S$7,000, and disqualified from all classes of driving licences for three years.

Meng Xianglei pleaded guilty on Aug. 5 to one count of driving under the influence, and another for driving without due care.

He had crashed his Mercedes into a stationary police car along Somerset Road after a night out drinking at two places.

Drank at two places

On Apr. 5, 2024, at about 10pm, Meng met his friends at Jurong Trade Hub and drank about five glasses of beer at a restaurant.

The group then decided to go to another pub in Geylang 20km away.

At the second location, he drank another five glasses of beer before deciding to drive himself home.

Hits police car in Orchard area

At around 2:30am, he decided to drive himself home to Ang Mo Kio.

At Somerset Road towards Grange Road, Meng failed to spot a stationary police car with its hazard lights on.

He lost control and collided into the police car, damaging its left rear side.

Over limit

After his arrest, the breathalyser test recorded 86 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath.

This was more than double the 35 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath prescribed limit.

The repair costs of the damaged police car was more than S$2,300.

Meng has since made full restitution for the amount.

He could have been fined S$2,000 to S$10,000 or jailed up to 12 months, or both, for driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Repeat offenders may be fined up to S$20,000, and jailed up to two years.

Those who drive without due care or attention can be fined up to S$1,500, jailed for up to six months, or both.

The driver would have a stronger case for leniency if he drove into the police car because a woman was giving him a blow job at that moment.
