I have to say that based on this video, the Syrian armour corp is sadly lacking. But I am not sure the SAF would have done any better. The reason why they would not have an infantry squad deployed with the tanks is that they would lose half the squad to snipers. You can see a BMP 2 escorting some T-72s around, but never dismounting their AI. The ISraelis are the same too. Their AI will not come out of the APCs, nor seldom do you see infantry on foot around the tanks. Too vulnerable to snipers, booby traps, IEDs, etc.
In this particular scene where the tank was hit, all 3 tanks had their turrets pointing the same way and no tank saw where the shot came from. Hence, no round was fired at the roof where the RPG team was. In fact, the RPG team could have gotten 2 more shots off because the tanks were just milling around, not even looking for a shooter.
There is a role for MBTs in FIBUA. Every significant battle since WW2 has had armour in build up area. eg. Stalingrad, Berlin, Bulge, etc. Even the jungle fighters Vietcong captured Saigon with an armour force of T-55/54. But the tactics employed by the Syrian army are different from the US Army. The US army would have put drones in the air, and snipers on over watch. The minute the RPG team showed up the roof top, either snipers would have spotted them or drones would. That RPG team would have been either mortared or snipered at to prevent them from even taking a shot. The terrain is similar to many small malaysian towns like Ipoh and even parts of JB. Namely, low rise apartment buildings with narrow streets.
Unfortunately, SAF armour doctrine is not designed for FIBUA. Not sure what its designed for anymore. Maybe for show.
