Progress has been made in February 2016! Australian policy makers are seeing the red tape disappear for citizens who choose to use the natural healing and pain sedative benefits of cannabis. It is now legal for the people to grow and use this wonderful plant!

By Christina Zdanowicz, CNN

The amendments to the Narcotic Drugs Act will allow cannabis to be legally grown for medical and scientific purposes for the first time in Australia.

“This is an historic day for Australia and the many advocates who have fought long and hard to challenge the stigma around medicinal cannabis products so genuine patients are no longer treated as criminals,” Minister for Health Sussan Ley said in a statement.

“This is the missing piece in a patient’s treatment journey and will now see seamless access to locally-produced medicinal cannabis products from farm to pharmacy.”

The decision came exactly a year after 25-year-old Daniel Haslam lost his life to terminal bowel cancer. Haslam used medical marijuana to ease his pain and nausea before he died last February.

His mother, Lucy, started a medical cannabis advocacy group called United in Compassion and petitioned for the government to make it legal.

Australian Sen. Richard Di Natale brought up Haslam’s story before Parliament on Wednesday.

“It is incredibly fitting that today we are passing this bill which is one step towards making medicinal cannabis accessible to people like Dan,” Di Natale said.

“Thank you to Lucy for everything you have done. Please know that your family’s grief, pain and suffering has not been in vain and this is a legacy that Dan will leave here in Parliament.”

Senator Richard Di Natale, on Tuesday, posted this video and statement to his Facebook page…

“Dan Haslam was 20 years old when he was diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer. He had everything ahead of him. Dan went through hell. He spent years enduring chemotherapy that made him nauseous, he lost weight, he was unable to eat.

“Dan developed something called ‘anticipatory nausea.’ That’s when just the thought of going in and getting chemo was enough to give him nausea. He was so unwell, he lost so much weight that it appeared that the chemotherapy would be no longer be used.

“Then quite by accident Dan’s family found out about medicinal cannabis, and like any desperate parents they did what they could and the effects were profound. His nausea settled and he regained some quality of life in those final few years.

“Today is one year since Dan’s passing. It is incredibly fitting that today we are passing this Bill which is one step towards making medicinal cannabis accessible to people like Dan. Thank you to Lucy for everything you have done. Please know that your family’s grief, pain and suffering has not been in vain and this is a legacy that Dan will leave here in Parliament.”

Australia resident Narelle Reimers wished she could have used medical marijuana when she was fighting cancer.

“As a cancer survivor I could’ve used some medicinal marijuana at times to relieve the pain, anxiety, hopelessness feelings, sadness, worry, insomnia, etc,” she wrote on Facebook. “Finally some common sense from our government.”

Dr. Sanjay Gupta: It’s time for a medical marijuana revolution

While cannabis plants can now be legally grown in Australia, it was unclear when the plants would be ready for use by prescription-carrying patients. Regulations need to be put in place and production licenses would need to be applied for before production can begin, according to United in Compassion.

The health minister reminded people that the changes would not affect recreational marijuana, which remains illegal.

Where Do We Go From Here…
While the global attitude is changing and acceptance of this natural healing plant is becoming popular, I personally hope to see much more conversation about the use of THC and the using the raw plant for it’s nutritional value.

I just love Australia, the REAL first world country..compare to low life sinkieshit land.

This is unlikely to happen in Singapore, despite the nation's yearning to be "First-World" and Innovative and "Think-out-of-the-box" emphasis. As long as the people here have it in their heads that this is a "conservative" society, Peesai will always have to wait and see what happens the rest of the world and then jump in at the end. Late.

Marijuana has been used in Asian communities before the west (weatern hemisphere, that is) was even discovered. It is not physically additive (as claimed by the authorities), and will grow well in the local climate - without experienced botanists needed to cultivate and raise the crop! Per unit area harvested, ganja is worth much more than any other commercial crop known to man! So what is Peesai waiting for? If the parliamentarians don't approve, can't the courts relax the legal status? Will the cops arrest someone growing this to treat a sick relative? Why isn't there ONE politician who is pro-decriminalization of marijuana? Damn! Even the people in the arts remain tight-lipped about this! Ganja must be really really taboo here!

Cheers!

Australia is always very current..they did their homework well..

This is how real first world country works..

In these areas, the US leads the world. Its the people! They do not wait for government endorsement, but just do what they feel justified. As long as it goes along with their conscience, they speak out, verbally, then though the media sources, and if enough support is garnered from the community, a movement begins, then the politicians pick up from there. Whereas here in Peesai, everyone awaits the government to enact a law, through parliament, then the ball-carriers hop in, soon followed by the connected blokes, then the whole society goes along, well-comforted with the knowledge that it has the backing and approval of the authorities. If the government isn't supportive, no one dares to even speak out for the issue. For fear of being arrested for being "anti-establishment."

Cheers!
