Just to let you guys know that the govt is internally divided. lots of name calling and what not. What was thought to be a well conceived plan to target Yahoo and curtail views of readers but throwing 9 govt linked websites have badly misfired. To make matters worse is that the MDA CEO has a mum and brother buying $10 million apartments each, developed by a GLC and given discounts of 10%+10%+3%, not available to buyers in the open market has been a massive boo boo.

We not talking about $1 or $2M, it is whopping $20 million doled out by a family of a civil servant. And developed by a Govt linked company. How does an individual who believes in high capital of the American style end up banning free speech and an American website that reports local news in a clear objective and neutral manner.

Within a month, Chief of Govt Communication and the son of former disgraced President has screwed up.

NEW CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER FOR MEDIA DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY
Ms Koh Lin-Net will be appointed as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Media Development Authority (MDA), with effect from 1 November 2012. Ms Koh succeeds Mr Aubeck Kam, who will relinquish his appointment on 31 October 2012.
Mr Aubeck Kam
2 Mr Kam, 42, joined MDA as its CEO on 1 November 2010. Under his leadership, MDA made significant contributions to the development of the media industry. The MDA Grant Schemes were revamped to provide greater and more flexible support to the media sector, at the same time placing greater emphasis on the development of quality content, talent up-skilling and raising productivity. Singapore’s plans to fully switchover from analogue to digital broadcasting by 2020 were also kick-started during Mr Kam’s tenure at MDA.
3 Mr Kam was pivotal in enhancing MDA’s regulatory capability, implementing the cross-carriage measures, and harmonising film and television classifications. With the setting up of the Media Literacy Council, Mr Kam strengthened MDA’s partnership with the community, as well as media literacy and cyber wellness efforts. He also played a key role in enhancing support for public broadcasting, and spearheaded the implementation of quality public service broadcast programmes to be delivered across different media platforms in step with changing consumer habits.
4 Mr Kam served in the Singapore Police Force from 1989 to 2002 and 2004 to 2006. From 2002 to 2004, he was at the Ministry of Trade and Industry where he was Singapore’s deputy chief negotiator for the Singapore-India Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement and the chief negotiator in the ASEAN-Singapore Free Trade Agreement. Mr Kam was with the Ministry of Manpower as Deputy Secretary from 2006 to 2010 where he helped formulate and implement national manpower policies, ranging from workforce development, labour and occupational safety standards as well as the entry of foreign workers, to income security and retirement adequacy for workers. Ms Koh Lin-Net
5 Ms Koh, 43, joined the Economic Development Board in 1991, moving to the Singapore Tourist Promotion Board (now Singapore Tourism Board) in 1994 until 1997. After obtaining her Masters in Business Administration from Harvard Business School in 1999, Ms Koh held concurrent positions in the Economic Development Board and Infocomm Development Authority, before moving to Biomedical Research Council at the former National Science and Technology Board (now A*STAR) in 2000. From 2001 to 2004, she was concurrently the Director for Intellectual Property Policy Division, as well as Strategic Planning Division, in the Ministry of Law.
6 In 2004, Ms Koh was posted to the Ministry for Information, Communications and the Arts (MICA) as Director of Arts and Heritage Development. In 2007, she was appointed as the Deputy Secretary (Infocomms, Media and the Arts) at MICA. While at MICA, she conceptualised the visions, positioning, budget and management structures for two major national projects – the School of the Arts and the National Arts Gallery.
7 Ms Koh is currently the Deputy Secretary (Trade) at the Ministry of Trade and Industry, a post she has held since 2008. As Deputy Secretary, she is responsible for Singapore’s trade and economic relations in the bilateral and multi-lateral spheres, including the negotiation and the implementation of free trade agreements with Singapore’s key trading partners. She also oversees the promotion of Singapore’s interest at regional and multi-lateral forums such as ASEAN, APEC, and the World Trade Organization. I can say that quite a number of anti-PAP agents have successfully infiltrated the civil service, inducing a series of missteps and cockups from within its entrenched hierarchies. The objective is to embarrass the PAP govt and sow discord among its contentious factions.

Well done comrades. Take a bow.

Found it.
The Hotel Properties Limited episode that sparked off a political storm in Singapore in 1996 has been buried alive by the PAP. But its ghost will continue to haunt those involved.

It all started when the Stock Exchange of Singapore (SES) censured a publicly listed property development company called Hotel Property Ltd (HPL) for not seeking shareholders' approval for the sale of some of its condominium developments at a discount price.

Dr Lee Suan Yew, Lee Kuan Yew's younger brother, was on the board of directors of the company. He had purchased a unit in a condominium project developed by HPL called Nassim Jade.

Shareholders of HPL had been grumbling about the way business was conducted in the company especially when it came to dealings with the Lee family. Many of the shareholders were waiting to buy units at the said project. When the launch of the property never came to pass, the shareholders saw red and demanded an explanation.

The stock exchange authorities quickly announced that HPL had breached regulations. One day later, Lee Kuan Yew and his son, Lee Hsien Loong, publicly revealed that they too had bought HPL condominiums. The story made headlines and started tongues wagging. The story was then traced back to one Ong Beng Seng, a property tycoon in Singapore, and Managing Director of HPL.

Ong had developed two condominium projects at the choiciest districts of Singapore. One was the abovementioned Nassim Jade situated where opulent and expansive embassies and mansions were located around Nassim Road. The other, Scotts 28, was at the heart of Singapore's shopping and tourist district Scotts Road. Both projects consisted of condominum apartments valued at millions of dollars per unit before the property slump.

More red faces

It was also revealed that not only had Lee Kuan Yew, his brother and his son purchased these apartments, they were offered substantial discounts to boot. The apartments were due to be put on sale on the open market on 17 April 1995. Three days before the official launch, HPL conducted a "soft launch" where a select group of potential customers were invited to have first go at the apartments. This was not exactly an unheard of practice amongst property developers. The problem was that because HPL was a publicly listed company, it had shareholders to account to. Rules under the SES Manual Listing stated that approval had to be sought for transactions involving "connected persons" of the company involved and those persons' associates. The HPL did not seek the permission of its shareholders. Suan Yew, Lee's brother, was a non-executive director of the company.

At the soft launch, Madam Kwa Geok Choo, chose an apartment to buy. She was quoted a price of $3,578,260 (or $1,583 per square foot) for the apartment. This was a seven percent discount on the list price. Buyers at soft launches are usually given only a five percent discount.

Later, Kwa Geok Choo contacted her son, Hsien Loong, and told him of the Nassim Jade apartments upon which he called Aunty Pamelia Lee, wife of Uncle Suan Yew, and said that he and his wife, Ho Ching, were interested in buying the property as well. Aunty Pamelia then later came back to her nephew and offered him an apartment for $3,645,100 a discount of 12 per cent or $437,412 on the asking price. The Deputy Prime Minister accepted the offer.

This was not all. On the Scotts 28 condiminiums, similar offers and purchases were made. Lee Kuan Yew and son bought two more units and paid $2,791,500 and $2,776,400 respectively for them, each bagging a five percent discount.

All in all, Lee Kuan Yew received from HPL a total of $416,252 whilst Lee Junior got $643,185 in discounts. All the purchases amounted to more than $10 million and were carried out without mortgages and loans.

It must be remembered that all this while, decisions of sales and the discounts were carried out at the directors' level which involved Lee Suan Yew. None of the shareholders nor the SES had the slightest idea of what was going on.

And yet, this was just the tip of the iceberg.

It was later found out that Lee Kuan Yew's entire family was in on the purchases. Daughter Lee Wei Ling, a medical doctor in a government hospital; sister Lee Kim Mon; and his two other brothers Freddy and Dennis; Kwa Kim Li, a niece of Lee; and Gloria Lee, Lee's sister in law, all bought the condos at hefty discounts. Wei Ling bought two apartments at Nassim Jade and was reported to have sold one off for a tidy profit. Again, all these transactions were carried out without the approval of the shareholders of HPL.

Forbes has an annual list of The 1000 Richest....
Is there any way to find out the 1000 richest Singaporeans by assets? Excluding recently naturalized Singaporeans. It would make interesting reading.

Forbes can only identify wealth information that are publicly available. It inevitably means corporate identities who stakes in companies cannot be hidden.

One your business interest are covered by nominee accounts, trust accounts, and private business set-ups, it is no longer available to the public. Kwa Geok Choo Pte Ltd and there is another Pte ltd company with a Malay name which I cannot recall controlled by Lee Kong Chian's family would be very interesting.

They've already did articles on the Pinoys, Indos and M'sians. I'm still waiting for an article on our MIWs
