if people need help they should approach their welfare services for assistance, not steal food. But that being said, I feel that punishment for simple theft cases like these are grossly excessive and fail to take into the plight of the wrong-doer.

As for adultery, it should not be considered a crime because it is part and parcel of human nature and it does not hurt other people.

I am glad that the police has broken up this shoplifting syndicate. It's only a pity that they would get a few year's jail at most. I would prefer that their right hands be chopped off. This would nip their kleptomaniac behaviour permanently.

I think if you want to rob, it's not worth shop lifting. The goods are difficult to hide and plenty of possible witnesses. Most shoplift out of desperation if they take only food items. Those who shop lift fashion items, there is no excuse.

Foreigners commit less crimes than sinkies. So, it is more likely that the thieves were sinkies. I hope their hands get lopped off for this heinous crime.
