SINGAPORE: Police have arrested 11 people for theft at the Giant supermarket along Tampines North Drive 2 in the first week of December this year.*

In a news release, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) said the cases took place at the self check-out counters, where the suspects are believed to have placed scanned items with those that were not scanned. They paid for the scanned items, but left with everything, including items not scanned and not paid for.*

Shop theft is punishable by jail of up to seven years, as well as a fine.

Have compassion. If it's food stuff, it should be forgiven.giant will earn even more sympathy from customers and gain sales.

Then everyone will start stealing. Shop theft is actually the price Giant should pay by saving on staff costs.

Gongkias! Try to save some bucks ended up in jail!

Company save money when you self check-out. Of course, you are entitled to one or two free items.

"Taking" food and eat when one is hungry and not able to afford, shouldn't be a crime.

If I see someone who "takes" a loaf of bread at the supermarket, opens it, and eats to satisfy his or her hunger, and if the security guard confronts him or her, I would speak up and argue for him or her and for pay for the loaf of bread.

The ones that were arrested in Giant can probably afford and yet steal. That is a crime (though we are clear from the article, why the 11 of them have done so).

Why do we punish those who "take" food when he or she has no means to afford? Where is compassion?

Extrapolating this issue a little further, if we punish a "taker" of food with 7 years jail and yet letting a man or woman who commits adultery off scot free with no incarceration, is there any logic?

The adulterer, in my view has committed a far greater "crime" for "stealing sex" ~ far greater than the "taker" of the food, who is hungry and yet cannot afford the loaf of bread. No?

Sorry to sound philosophical this morning, my apologies, if I do.

if people need help they should approach their welfare services for assistance, not steal food. But that being said, I feel that punishment for simple theft cases like these are grossly excessive and fail to take into the plight of the wrong-doer.

As for adultery, it should not be considered a crime because it is part and parcel of human nature and it does not hurt other people.

Sarah, good morning.

Assuming if you are hungry, yet cannot afford, and you walk into a supermarket's bakery section, the smell and aroma probably overwhelms any logical thought of finding out whatever avenues of welfare assistance.

The guy or gal simply has no means to afford the loaf of bread for heaven's sake. He or she eats it on the spot and not even taking it out of the store!

Your take on adultery is incongruous, justifying your obvious lack of respect for your spouse.

it's more like cheapskate sinkies trying to pull a fast one.

Two consenting adults is not called "stealing sex". Anyway sex can be stolen meh?

Going by your logic, a man can claim he is justified in outraging the modesty of a woman by saying he was overwhelmed by her attractiveness which pushed out all logical thought.

As for lacking respect for my spouse, that is between him and me. Since when was being a disrespectful person a crime?

Morn Kraft. It looks like it from what is portrayed in the CNA article. But we wouldn't know the exact circumstances.

Have a fabulous day ahead, Kraft. :)

Hunger is tangiblly more basic than your lust.

By all means commit adultery. It is your life and your principles of leading your life.

Obviously, your inability to appreciate what is right or wrong when having fun (like taking pictures of innocent folks in public and publishing here) has infected your ability to have a clear mind when it comes to adultery.

I shan't say more. I am going to have my Ham & Eggs breakfast instead of trying to reason with a selfish and self centered person like you, who shows no sense of remorse for "hurting" an innocent man through your publication of his picture here in this Forum.

Further, as a mod, you should be ashamed of yourself and your act of indiscretion.

PS : I withdraw my above assertions against you. It has been heartening to see that you have taken my advice. :) I am glad that I have not lose faith in this Forum as there are people like you who listen to "reasoning". Thank you. :)

I didn't condone adultery, I'm saying it is hardly a criminal offence.

Hunger being more tangibly basic, on the other hand, does not excuse theft from being a crime. I'm saying the sentencing should be lighter to reflect the circumstances of the criminal act. Nothing that you've said contradicts my opinion.

You said earlier :

Now you change your position and isn't that contradiction and condoning adultery? No?

Thanks Kraft.

However, please keep the lovey-dovey part to yourself or your partner and potential partners. I am pretty certain you are not my type of man :)

I am glad that the police has broken up this shoplifting syndicate. It's only a pity that they would get a few year's jail at most. I would prefer that their right hands be chopped off. This would nip their kleptomaniac behaviour permanently.

Thanks Kraft.

Close your eyes, give me your hand, darling
Do you feel my heart beating?
Do you understand, do you feel the same?
Am I only dreaming, is this burning an eternal flame?
:o
