I checked his background. Apparently he was raised by his mother and grew up in Circuit road vicinity. He is not associated with the Lee clan or any other luminary. Not sure why he was at the funeral but he had been helping at Tanjong Pagar for sometime. His demeanour and mannerism also suggest that he was not born with a silver spoon and that he is Cantonese. My understanding is that the family struggled. Not sure why he spoke about the Lanfang republic but it sure must have delighted the Lee clan. Who picked him or sponsored him is also a mystery.

I think the Lanfang Republic (an obscure footnote to a footnote of regional history) story is to stoke the sense of destiny among the Lee Clan. After all, there are strong suggestions that the Lee Clan descended from some of the remnants of the citizens of the LR, and that they see Singapore as the Second Lanfang Republic, but this time destined to last a thousand years.

Lanfang Republic disappeared not due to neighbouring Malay sultanates.
Its demise was due to the Dutch, the western power of the time.

In modern context its like beefing up your defence to stand up to the US.
