The court sentenced an assistant pastor to 16 months’ jail today (4 Oct) for having oral sex with a 15-year-old church member. He was 29 years older than the girl and is a father of 3.
The girl was 15 years old at the time of the offence. She performed oral sex on the assistant pastor on 2 occasions.
The court heard that the first was at a park along Bartley Road between end-September and early-October 2011. The second in mid-October 2011 at the fourth level inside the church which both the pastor and the girl attended. The church is said to be located in central Singapore.
According to court documents, the pastor met the girl in 2010 in the course of organising activities for the church’s youth members. They became closer after an overseas mission to Myanmar.
The pastor then started to contact the girl via calls, explicit emails and mobile texts, saying that he loved her and would like to have sex with her.
The court also heard how he initiated the oral sex at the park and the girl pushed him away after a few seconds.
In the second occasion, the pastor asked the girl to help him with some chores. He then brought her to the fourth level of the church to have oral sex. All these while, the other pastors were on the ground floor.
Eventually, the girl made a police report against the pastor.
The public prosecutor said the pastor’s actions had undermined the public’s trust in the church.
The fact that the act was performed within the church is also an aggravating factor, prosecutor added.
The pastor’s lawyer, in his defence, said that circumstances had led the pastor being in a depressed mood and addicted to sex. These conditions, the lawyer said, went untreated.
The accused, who is no longer with the church, could have been jailed up to 10 years, fined, and caned on each count.
